WKTU & WNEW Copy one another for special weekends.

I've just been to WNEW 102.7's Website and seen this weekend they are doing a Madonna weekend since a new cd by her is being released. Now WKTU is also doing a Madonna weekend for her new cd. This is very strange at the same time, even though both stations play Madonna and are Dance, why are they both doing the same exact special weekends? Can't KTU do some other special weekend of their own instead of copying WNEW especially since they are competing with one another?

When Madonna comes out with a new Album, its a big thing. Both stations are doing Madonna Weekends at the same time, because it is the First weekend since the first single got Released to radio.

A throwback to the good old days... two seperately owned stations competing with each other and trying to one-up each other. We could use more of that!

I agree with that part. like when WABC & WMCA were competing with one another in the 60s except WABC won the competition and stayed around til May 1982 before going to a talk format while WMCA did that in september 1970.

KTU has got Mix beat though.... if you look at the link for Mix 102.7 it says to listen Monday at noon to hear Madonna's new song while KTU has been playing it all weekend.

Glenn Friscia on Mix played the song to start out his mix two saturdays ago on WNEW Mix FM.

bound to happen...

With the battles heating up over dance, and you can read tons of threds on here about it, MIX was bound to step back to center, despite tons of people saying they always stay focused on Classic Dance exclusively. Obviously as the "Classic Dance Station" this promotion, for a cd of all freshbeats isn't exactly focused, even if its Madonna! I mean KTU had Madonna on briefly Friday and a segment on Monday and being the dance leader and a station that plays old and NEW dance hits, it made sense for them to promote an ALL NEW cd.

However, as the two stations dual, anything is fair game apparently, because this isn't a greatest hits cd, its a cd with lots of NEW stuff, if this promo weekend is a sign that MIX is willing to look at new dance, I think they'll surrender all the gains they made, as they'd just become that old KTU knock-off they signed on as instead of a station with a focus on a particular sound.

I wish I knew the demo breakdowns, may be corporate is telling them they are skewing too old. It will be interesting if they open up their playlist again.<P ID="signature">______________

Not too many people remember this, but there was a time in the early 60's where both WABC and WMCA called their jocks "The Good Guys." Apparently, WMCA did a better job of owning the brand and shortly thereafter, the WABC jocks were "The Swingin' Seven," .... and later, "The All Americans.". Somewhere during the early days of "Laugh-In," both stations also had ab"Sock-It-To Me Summer". Once again, WMCA stuck with it and WABC dropped it. Those were the days! We could use more head-to-head in-format competition. It makes everybody better. To quote Scott Shannon, "I just love the smell of napalm in morning drive."
