WKTV brewery fire coverage

I don't live near Utica so I had to follow the coverage of the Matt's Brewery fire thru WKTV's website. What I saw was amazing. Their video and reporting was as professional as anything I have seen. The video from their tower cam was chilling. It looked like the entire Mohawk Valley was on fire. I always thought the tower cam was pretty much a joke. My congradulations to the entire staff of WKTV for an excellent job. You came across as a major market station. You should be proud of the work you have done.
I am, also, very happy to know no one was seriously injured in what could have been a horrible tragedy and that the Matt family will rebuild. - And, that Shultz & Dooley are safe & sound.

WKTV really did an excellent job on this story, something I'm not saying nowhere near as much as a few years back.

They had reporters on-scene for what I'd say was 2 days straight. Live reports, cut-ins, the whole 9 yards.

And seeming you think the towercam is most of the time a joke, they're hoping to get a cam in downtown Utica.

Utica is a town that doesn't get a lot of "big stories" like this. Everyone's adrenaline levels must have gone through the roof when this started. Much more exciting than the usual buffet of minor house fires, police blotter items, court reporting, political press conferences and charity fundraisers!!

Besides... how can a newsroom dominated by 20-somethings NOT be interested when a brewery is in jeopardy? All kidding aside, they did a great job. I'm sure there will be some awards coming out of that coverage -- not to mention some nice resume tape material for those aiming for larger markets.

A new towercam closer to the city is definitely much-needed. The existing one was good for showing the enormity of the brewery fire, but that's about it. Normally, you can't really see anything because it's too far away from downtown Utica. On days with high humidity, the air is too hazy to see much of anything, and on any night, all you can see are blurry lights, and the blurry blue letters on the insurance building. Then there's times they show the WKTV parking lot because you can't see anything else. Or worse, when they show Grace Road leading up the hill, which usually has no cars on it, and no other landmarks. Just a random road in the middle of nowhere. In those cases, just skip it... why bother? A camera right in downtown Utica would have a much better chance of showing some actual traffic. Even if it's quiet, you still get better "landscape" shots when you're right in downtown, as opposed to being 4 miles away.
