WKUN Monroe

WKUN 1490 AM in Monroe recently added a translator at 102.5 FM, and appears in the past couple of days to have switched formats from Southern gospel to oldies (both via satellite).

The station was teasing the FM as "coming soon" for at least a couple of years on the TOH ID during Braves games on 1490.

I caught em this week scanning AMs. I've never noticed them before, I guess because they were gospel. I looked up the frequency and decided it had to be them under a different format. The website still shows gospel. AM comes in quite well in my office in Loganville, FM not at all. Haven't heard an ID on AM yet. Also haven't heard an ad.

Some history: My Mom was secretary at WKUN in the early 70's. It was one of two AM's in the little town back then. The other was WMRE. WKUN was a daytimer assigned to a different frequency at that time (1580). The school bus would let me off at the station after school, and the guys taught me how to run the board when I was in the 4th grade. At that time, it was like magic to me in that I could play a record inside, then go outside and it was on the radio. At some point WMRE ( 24 hr) went away and WKUN took over their frequency.

We underestimate the importance of taking time to introduce broadcasting to young people. I had a ham radio friend several years older that gave me a tour of WGFS in Covington when I was in my early teens. Got with my friend not long after this and we worked on our FCC First Phone license together. That license got me my first job at WAGA-TV for many years (really enjoyed my time there) that paid for both college and grad school. Now I'm back to radio going into my retirement years for fun. All this started with a simple radio station tour.

Is it carrying the Westwood One satellite oldies format?
