WKVB has applied for a new transmitter site

Or maybe they got to a point where they were throwing too much good money at a bad station. They have lots of licenses, and thinning the herd is sometimes a good idea.

I still think that if they had originally moved from Paxton to Hudson instead of to W. Boylston, that they may have spent around the same amount of money for a significantly better result in greater Boston when they were motivated to do it. I don't know whether they just didn't think of that back then, or if there was a reason making it not logistically possible that is no longer in play.

I think W. Boylston seems to look a lot better "on paper", or even visually when you see that tall tower along Route 290 with the white flashing lights at night, than it actually effectively is as a site to rimshot Boston. On TV, Ch. 66 from Hudson (and now Ch. 68, and subchannels 50 and 58) always came in better in the Boston area than Ch. 27 from W. Boylston ever did.

Are you guys forgetting that they had WKAF? They bought WILD-FM from Radio One moved the main transmitter from Abington to Great Blue and ran a simulcast on 97.7 for years. That gave them the same territory that this move does for EMF. It was only after WAAF's format started to lose it's popularity that they decided to switch formats on WKAF. I think at that point they were done spending major money on that format.

Entercom could have remained at the Paxton site and when the on-channel boosters started to be authorized by the FCC, they could have enhanced the original signal with translators just like WXLO and WXRV did without moving their main signal.

Yup. I completely remember that Entercom paid $30 million to acquire 97.7 because of their inability to deliver a better signal to Greater Boston from 107.3.

I don't know if a loss in popularity of WAAF was responsible for breaking up the 107.3/97.7 simulcast. For the most part, there wasn't a lot of movement in AQH share during the time that the 107.3/97.7 simulcast was in place, and the vast majority of WAAF listening still came from 107.3. I think Entercom believed cash flow would be improved by airing a distinct & separate format on 97.7.

Yes, splitting up 107.3 and 97.7 was all sales driven. With the split, they also revamped 107.3's lineup by launching Matty&Nick(currently Fitzy on Greg Hill Show on 93.7) in the afternoons, moving Carrie to middays and Mike Hsu to Greg Hill. Matty and Nick's sales were struggling badly and they only lasted 2 years. Not sure if they would've benefited from 97.7's simulcast but's that's neither here nor there.

WKVB multicasting technology

WKVB has apparently begun sharing WXLO's multicasting technology - meaning WKVB's signal is now being rebroadcast via the same network of repeaters in the Greater Boston area as WXLO.

How is reception?

Neither WXLO or WXRV, who also use the same booster network (and more for WXRV), broadcast in HD. WXRV did briefly, but I had heard they shut it off because it didn’t work well with the boosters.

WKVB was in HD, with the other K-Love channel on the HD2. Did they keep it on with the boosters, is there any problem if they did?

WKVB is still in HD. I've never seen them running a HD2 at all.

I tuned into K-Love for a short time yesterday from my phone. While it came in reasonably ok, there was still quite a bit of inference.

Then there is Renew Radio, which appears to have no advertising budget whatsoever, and yet comes in very clearly on their translator on 103.7 instead.

comparing the two signals is unfair, ones right in boston proper, 10 watts at 700 some odd ft

It was not meant to be a signal comparison at all, but much rather, why should listeners of the genre fuss to get K-Love, when Renew-FM is right smack in the middle of their backyard instead?

K-Love can also be heard loud and clear in Boston transmitting from the Pru on 100.7 WZLX HD3.

Renew FM is not all music Theres alot of preaching and teaching and the music is all automated, no jocks.. and has a small service area. I'd wager a good portion of the lilly white type suburbs are kloves audience. some people, like me.. dont wanna deal with preaching and teaching

OK, but barring one teaching program, that I actually like, and surprised that it is still being broadcasted, I have heard nothing but music at all the times that I have tuned in.

Looks liek theyre mostly preachign mon-friday and daytime saturday..its sat night and sunday thats mainly music.

But very directional though. I am one city next to it, and I cannot pick the station up at all.

Yes, I’m in Somerville just a few miles away and it’s very weak here. I used to try to listen sometimes when it was “Big 105.3” playing satellite or voice tracked oldies.
