WKVO

I used to be one of the owners of WKVO in Havelock, North Carolina...........back in the

1970s............anyone remember us? We at first bought WUSM at 1330 Am In Havelock

and added the FM in 197l.............

Were you associated with Rick Goines? Pete Weke? I worked at Q105 WMSQ in Havelock with Rick Goines.

Firecop

I recall the great WKVO with Pete & Bruce & you. 1st upstairs in the old WUSM studio then out to the tower location. WKVO had a great sound and tight production. You guys did a great job on turning a dog around!

Hi Gary!! It has been a while. I remember the old automation system you had to key in the boot to get the teletype to read the paper tape so it could load the old ferrite core memory! We moved the station from the old head shop to a strip mall in Havelock when Rick and Darryl got it, and it has been sold to Next media. It has the power upgrade and moved freq to 105.1 with an erp of 18kw. Do you remember the old RCA transmitter? I replaced the ever drifting exciter with a new one and it sounded like a million bucks. I think the old FM TX is outside the old building, rusting away.

You used to work at WMBL if i am not mistaken.......You know the old WKVO am tower

is still up....I was in Havelock last week.......I remember all of it....we used to have

to go live during Thunderstorms .....I guess 1330 is gone forever.........I am the Vice

President at WLNG in Sag Harbor, New York......

Yep, 740 is dead also. As far as i know, Next still has the licence for the station, they just had too many problems to keep it on. It would be a nice community service station if someone wanted to run it, I would replace the tower, that folded unipole is still up and I am sure the ground system is toast. ED

WMBL was bought by Clear Channel some years back and taken off the air to make way for upgrades to their 730 WSCC/Charleston.

1330 licence is owned by Next media. I really hate that CC bought 740 and killed it. It had a lot of history. Granted it was not the station it used to be when it was on Radio Island. After losing the tower out at Little Nine during a huricane, I understand they had a heck of a time hanging a folded unipole on that old piece of the ch 11 tower that was put up there. I walked out to the old Radio Island site recently, It is fenced in, but the tower pier and ground system are still there.

What's being done with Radio Island now? I'd heard it was being developed for condos at one point, but someone here posted something else awhile back.

WMBL had a signal and ruled the beach. WAPE was another great beach station.

A shame WMBL was shut down :(

Radio Island is being divided, The ramp is still there to load the military trucks and equipment. the Avaition Fuel company owns the land where WMBL sat. There are condos on the Beaufort side, there will probably be more, hope not. There is a public beach access there. Walking around there brought back lots of memories. I pretty much lived over there during the summer as a kid. Did alot of camping on the dunes there. It was pretty cool, finished my air shift, signed the station off, and went to the tent!. I would take a shortwave radio to the tower and clip on the tower side of the ATU and see what I coiuld pick up. Most of the time the signals were so strong it would overload the radio!

There used to be a billboard Near Jacksonville, NC that said WAPE 500 miles of

music.........Is WBMA'S building and tower still up? I guuess 1400 and 1360 in

Bridgeton are gone...

Ray Cummins sold WBMA to Fred McCune who took it to a positive cash flow. They got an FM on 103.3 and called it "Z-103" It was a great station, lots of listeners. The station moved to Newport and eventually the AM was turned off. I think they tried to move 1400 over to little nine, but I do not think that panned out. Ron Benfield owns the licence to 1400 and moved it to Jacksonville. I think it is for sale now. 1380 in Bridgeton died several years back. I think it could be revived but you would need a 4 tower DA array. ED

I worked at WKVO summer of 1970 doing student teaching at East Carteret High School....that was enough teaching for me. decided to do radio for the next 18 years. Where is Pete and Bruce? I do promotional products and get to eastern NC often and it brings back memories driving on 70 past the tower site and remembering playing Freda Payne, Alive N Kickin', Rare Earth and all the music...when music was music!
