"WKXL-FM" apparently on the air

Interestingly it's 103.9, not 104.3. Unless I missed something, Gordon bought 104.3 from WVNH last year. As of right now 104.3 still repeats WVNH, but they moved what was their 103.3 xltr from Pittsfield to Concord at 103.9 in two jumps just to put WKXL on it. So...WKXL owns 104.3 but carries WVNH. WVNH owns 103.9 but carries WKXL.

I've only heard it from a distance. Anyone heard it in Concord proper? One thing I noticed is a considerable delay between the FM and AM. That may suggest some sort of audio-over-IP link between Redington Rd and Plausawa Hill.

I thought a translator had to rebroadcast an off-air pickup, or has that rule been waived for AM-FM translators? 1450 is pretty noisy at night that far east, not even all that clean during the day.

From what I understand of the new FCC rules on FM translators for AMs is that you can not use the translator to extend your coverage area. Considering that Plausawa Hill is on the complete other side of town from the AM site, I'm guessing city-grade coverage is extended quite a bit further east than what the AM provided.

Just about every AM -> FM translator I've heard has clearly not been an AM receiver at the FM site picking up the station. 103.9's audio quality is was very good when I heard it, but I don't think it's picking up 1450 over the air. I first noticed it a few weeks ago, so it'd been on the air for a while.

You are correct about not extending your daytime coverage, and the new 103.9 uses a DA pointing westward to keep its pattern legal. (See link)

Huh. I see what you mean. Looks like the heights & maybe E. Concord are all that's gonna get a city-grade signal, probably pretty noisy downtown or at the studio. I suppose it does complement the AM signal though.

Now all they need is programming someone actually wants to listen to.
