WKXU 102.5 FM

Noticed that WKXU 102.5 FM "Country 102" has been off-air all day. Is this just a technical issue or something bigger such as the pending move of the facility to its new city of license, Hillsborough? The timing is kind of interesting being Labor Day weekend.

Could this be the FM simulcast of WPTF?

We all know they need the help and this is the biggest trend in radio across the country right now. Would be interesting to see....I have family out in Raleigh and I know I would enjoy the AM/FM option of some non blood pressure raising talk radio.

They were hiring for a "new sign on" station that had "full coverage" of the Raleigh-Durham market a few weeks ago, so I don't think it would be a simulcast.
Then again, they were playing fast and loose with "new sign on" and probably "full coverage" too, so it might just be Thunderdome.

WKXU, in its 102.5 form, has never had a website, though that address used to be used for WKXU when it was on 101.1 as "Country Legends Kix 101.1". I don't think 102.5 ever had a web presence as WHLQ either.

I don't know if this will become WPTF-FM...as a Louisburg-licensed station, 102.5 could have provided needed fill-in to a major null in the 680 AM nighttime pattern (north Raleigh, Wake Forest and Franklin County), but the move to Hillsborough negates this. A possible simulcast with WWMY 102.3, soon to be moved to Smithfield, wouldn't help this null much either. Now, if the object is for WPTF to establish an FM presence to attract a younger demographic (a la WSB, WOKV, et al), then a WPTF on FM is a brighter possibility.

As far as other format options, there's no telling. Beyond WPTF-FM or other current CMG simulcast possibilities, they could go variety hits (we've never really had that here), urban/hip-hop against K97.5, black gospel/ministry could work, especially in the western half of the market or maybe an active rock (with some changes to complement 96Rock). Maybe even AAA if they want to wade into those waters.

In possibly related news, I've noticed that WKIX-FM is now imaging as "Carolina's Greatest Hits 102.9 FM", though the logo remains the same. Guess they had to drop the "Y" from "Y-102.9" since its no longer in their call letters..especially if 102.3 possibly won't be a part of the simulcast much longer.

It's just a rimshot in the Raleigh part of the market. Would make a nice 96.9/102.5 simulcast

Another good possibility, as 96.9's signal is somewhat weak in the Hispanic-rich western portion of the market. WQOK's recent South Boston-to-Carrboro COL change and subsequent antenna move from Berea in northern Granville County to the WFXC stick in eastern Durham--complete with iBiquity sideband hash--has also degraded the WYMY signal in parts of Durham.

I want to say that WKIX and WKXU shared "kixonline.com" when they were "Country 102"...I do remember seeing the Country 102 logo with both stations listed underneath somewhere, and the webpage would be the likeliest place. I'm trying to look at the wayback machine, but it's being slow and testing my patience this morning.

Curtis Media will sign on no station before its time. Patience, my friend, beats staying thirsty every time.

Later . . . .

Ever since WBT did something similar, since I once heard someone say WPTF had trouble being heard in North Raleigh and the host said they picked it up real well in Cuba, I've believed this would have been a good move.

Shoulda convinced Curtis of that.
It's supposed to be a "new sign-on" and some originality is being proffered, so it's probably not a WPTF simulcast, especially with WZTK already here...

I have heard speculation that 96.1 will commit to classic rock in November. At the same time 102.3 and 102.5 will go pop alternative. I have no idea if there is any truth to that but it is an interesting strategy.
