WKYC airs 'Matlock' instead of NBC's Thursday's prime time shows

WKYC airs 'Matlock' instead of NBC's Thursday's prime time shows

Last night, Cleveland’s WKYC-TV opted to run a 1992 two-hour Matlock movie at 9 p.m. instead of NBC’s scheduled lineup. The rest of the country saw an Office repeat, a new episode of struggling White House sitcom 1600 Penn and a Law & Order: SVU repeat. There are many articles about this. http://www.wkyc.com/news/story.aspx?storyid=286495

Gannett appears to have a thing for Andy; The Andy Griffith Show airs on Gannett-owned WCSH in Portland, Maine every weekday at 2PM.

At first it was claimed because they could sell the local spots but at any rate this just show's you the state of NBC in 2013.

Showing the drawing power of the late Andy Griffith, the 2-hour movie beat ABC's Scandal repeat and Jimmy Kimmel Live Oscar special in the Men 25-54 demographic, according to Nielsen overnights.
It even tied Kimmel in the overall demographic of people 18 -34 years old, which is remarkable considering a good portion of that audience hadn't been born or was still in diapers when the show premiered

Network affiliates do this from time to time to sell a little more local time, in order to meet budget projections. I've seen others that have aired infomercials in prime time slots to accomplish this.

and they always seem to do it right before or after sweeps periods

If this was St. Louis, it probably would have been a Cardinals season recap special

But looking at the overnight ratings and seeing how successful it was compared to the office/1600 Penn and compared to ABC, it just shows you how old or unhip Cleveland is or at they very least hop popular matlock is. That is why this made news is the fact it actually got higher than expected results and it in Cleveland got higher ratings than 2 NBC sitcoms.

They're not the only ones doing this: Its also a daily staple at WFMY/Greensboro.

Per the article linked below, WKYC claims that they've done this the past 10 years. But has it been on a Thursday night before? I can imagine this sort of practice being much more common on a Saturday night...

I can never remember it being done in March but yeah they have being doing it for years even though WEWS at one point ran matlock the same way. Most time it is a Saturday nite after the season is over. The only other thing WKYC preempts is for the Cleveland Browns and Indians as they are the TV home for both teams.

A lineup of "Cleveland All-Pro Wrestling", "Beer Money", and "The Golf Zone With Jimmy Hanlon" would beat NBC now.

Even with their collective production budget of about $14.

Re: WKYC airs 'Matlock' instead of NBC's Thursday's prime time shows

It's kind of ironic considering WKYC-TV's status as a long time NBC affiliate and former NBC O&O...

Re: WKYC airs 'Matlock' instead of NBC's Thursday's prime time shows

Now that you mention it, Matlock appears to be on seven or eight times per
day on the DirecTV lineup. I was never a particular fan. It's sort of TV
Comfort Food. Odd though that of all the shows fitting that description this
one gets to run multiple times per day on different channels.

The show obviously skews older (i.e. retirees, etc), so they figure they have plenty of free time to watch.

Ironically, WKYC-3 was twice (1948-56 as WBNK and 1965 until a few years ago as WKYC) owned by NBC.

Actually, it was more than a few years ago that NBC sold it. In March 1990, NBC agreed to sell controlling interest (51 percent) to Multimedia. Then, in July 1995, Multimedia merged with Gannett, who still owns the station today.
