WKYQ Paducah's Kent King Dies

Longtime WKYQ air personality Kent King died Friday (6-13) at his home after suffering a heart attack. He was 51. Kent joined WKYQ in 1975 right after graduating Paducah Tilghman High School. A few short years later he would become the station's program director until stepping down in 1993. He remained in afternoon drive until 1998, when he started doing morning traffic reports on WKYQ and sister station WKYX. One of Kent's lasting legacies to WKYQ was his creation of his weekend show, "The Outlaw Hours", which is still heard on Friday and Saturday nights. Kent received national recognition for this concept. Kent also served as Emergency Management Director for McCracken County. The funeral is scheduled for Monday(6-16) at noon at Westside Baptist Church. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to: the American Heart Association, Kentucky Region, 240 Whittington Parkway, Louisville, KY 40222 or to the American Diabetes Association Memorial and Honor Program, PO Box 11454 Alexandria, VA 22312.

Kent hired me in 1987 as a WKYQ part timer. He greatly influenced me and my career. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Gloria and his family.

""Things are for the best, in this best of all possible worlds." Kent King

I'm a bit surprised there have been no replies about Kent King. I went to school with him 7th grade through graduation, two years of college, in the Paducah Tilghman broadcasring club and had the same close circle of friends. While we had a like/dislike relationship I did go into the GM's office when I was 17 and ask Gary Morse if we could find a place for Kent, I told him he seemed to have the radio bug and it would keep him from hanging around while I was doing my glorious 6p to midnight airshift on Big Kicks. We found a place for him and he took it from there. What a shame he died so young, and yes, 51 is very young. Prayers to his family on the loss. James Fletcher, Mike Green and a chick named Linda...like to hear your thoughts.

I think that line "all things are for best, etc" was Mike Moore on KYX, Kent may have picked it up from him.
