WKYS/V-103 Airchecks 1991

Hard to believe it was almost 20 years ago. WKYS sounds very mainstream urban, almost urban ACish in some respects. Donny Simpson was still with the station at this time.

WXYV V-103 was a nice sounding mainstream urban. These were taped on the overnight shift I believe. No DJs.

No in 1991 V-103 was a mainstream urban station 1991 is before hip-hop took over black urban radio you actually still had singing then in 91. V-103 is missed black radio in Baltimore really sucks.

Thanks for this. It is great to hear these old airchecks. Radio was so different back than. I noticed V103 had a lot of different imaging voices. One of them sounded like Pat Garrett without a lot of effects. Did he do imaging for V103 too? I remember he did Hot 95.9. Anybody have airchecks of that station or Hot 100 (DC)?

Man im not from Baltimore..but i can tell radio was so much better back then before all the Corporate business got involved. Live and Local Morning Shows and all that..that aircheck sounds good.

Everyone, thanks for your comments. I only visited the area a few times in the early 90s but I do remember V-103 quite fondly. I lived in DC in the summer of 91 for an internship and really enjoyed the station, particularly in the late night hours.

Sorry, I think this is all I have. I do have several of WMMJ and WHUR from 1991 which I will post in the not so distant future.

I checked out the airchecks from WKYS from 1991. They were jammin' back then. I didn't know that they were gonna bust in a Barry White song from the '70s in the playlist. Was that common on urban radio back in the early '90s because I also noticed a aircheck from WBLS-FM New York from 1993 (when it was still a full fledged Urban Contemporary) and before they played Sade "Kiss Of Life", they were playing The Stylistics "You Are Everything". Just curious.

No WHFS, sorry. Maybe someone else does.

In response to the other post. I think on the WBLS aircheck from 1993 they were dayparting though they were definitely urban contemporary as opposed to urban AC at this time and breaking into the "thunderstorm" mixes frequently on the weekends.

As for WKYS, the station had a very broad urban contemporary playlist at the time if I remember correctly and they were catering to wide demographics.

Unfortunately I do not have V-103's last day. The latest ones I have were the two from 1992.
