WKZE 99.1 Red Hook Will Move to 105.9 Soon

As I just mentioned on an earlier thread about "The Bridge" move from 98.9 to 106.9 as of last week. Does WKZE will move from 99.1 to 105.9 by either next week or so? This is according to WKZE's website that "Our signal at 99.1 FM will change in February to 105.9 FM". Does this going to interfer with WQSH's "Crush-FM" in Albany on 105.7? I was flipping through 99.1 but it is still carrying WKZE, but I don't see the station moving to 105.9 as of probably next week or so. 99.1 is still continues to interfer WKIP-FM at 99.3 that it didn't come very well in Kingston. I just told last Wednesday that 99.1 is off the air for a while so I checked that WKIP-FM at 99.3 came in loud and clear in Kingston until it went back on the air a few hours later during the afternoon. I hope WKZE will do better on 105.9 in Red Hook for the forseable future coming next week or during the month of February.

I hope WGNY-FM at 98.9 will be going on the air as soon as you think. Any thoughts?

In the immediate area (~5 miles) around the transmitter, yes, it would affect WQSH's signal... how many watts will the 105.9 transmitter be at, and at what HAAT? I know WQSH doesn't go very far east or west because of signals on 105.5 (WVEI-Easthampton, MA and WSKU-Little Falls respectively) :)

Back when I lived in Newburgh, I got WKTU and WHTZ in pretty well with a decent radio (I think even then-WBZZ if right up against a window), but my old alarm clock would only get WSPK and WPDH in my apartment building (ended up tossing it and buying a new one, then I realized I could've tried a different outlet or part of the bedroom :p)

Hopefully the new 105.9 WKZE translator won’t interfere with Walker Broadcasting’s ability to pick up the very weak signal of 105.9 WQXR for their 103.7 translator. Hopefully they are using a good directional antenna to receive the station and thus be able to filter out what will be rather powerful for a translator, WKZE signal, which although rather weak will likely reach Poughkeepsie.

I checked on my radio this morning that WKZE is now on 105.9. As I was listening towards the top of the hour, they had mentioned that WKZE is on 99.1 still, but I don't know why that the station was on 99.1. The station moved to 105.9, and as I said once again, it is going to interfere WQSH's "Crush-FM" in Albany at 105.7.

Now that 99.1 pulled the plug, I can hear WKIP-FM at 99.3 comes in loud and clear without getting interference from WKZE's translator. Good move!

It’s a terrible move if you want to listen to WQXR on 103.7! Although the WKZE translator comes in weak at my home in Hyde Park, it is strong enough to severely interfere with WQXR’s even weaker signal in Poughkeepsie. The 103.7 repeater is a jumbled mess transmitting a clash of both stations. Hopefully they can sort that out by re-orientating the receiving antenna in the coming days. I don’t know any other way to get a usable signal to It.; If not 103.7 will have to shut down and WQXR will be lost.

Update on Tuesday: 103.7 seems to have filtered out most of the WKZE interference of WQXR. However even though I have decent signal strength in Hyde Park, the program is still very weak and scratchy. At least they are working on it.

Now look what happened, 105.9's translator which is WKZE is interfering with WQSH's "Crush-FM" at 105.7 in the Albany listening area as well as parts of the Hudson valley. It does the same with WQXR's interference which is weak in Poughkeepsie which is 103.7. I hope we need another signal strength in the area.

Wednesday morning,WQXR on 103.7 is loud and clear as always. The WKZE translator is totally off the air, both 99.1 and 105.9.

The only way WKZE will be able to operate on 105.9 is with significantly lower power, or a directional antenna sharply limiting their signal to the South (toward the WQXR translator). Maybe they'll find another frequency. Let's see what happens.

I noticed this last night as well. I hope you are right but Poughkeepsie is way beyond 105.9 WQXR’s protected 57 dbu contour, which only extends to the White Plains / Tarrytown area. In fact it also well past Radio Locator’s often overly optimistic fringe area, which they determine for high end radios. Then again a translator isn’t supposed to travel 20 miles either, although ,they often do .In fact 105.9 W256BI protected zone ends somewhere Rhinebeck and Staatsburg. However, Radio Locater’s fringe shows it covering Poughkeepsie.
In my opinion the whole issue with WKZE needing a translator to cover the community they serve is wrong. They are licensed to Sharon CT. and they should be located there, not Red Hook. Especially now that WQQQ is switching to Public radio, there is no clear local presence in the area.

If the WKZE translator is unable to operate without interfering with WQXR, then it can't operate. The following is directly from the FCC rules:

Sec. 74.1203 Interference.

(a) An authorized FM translator or booster station will not be
permitted to continue to operate if it causes any actual interference
to:

(2) The reception of the input signal of any TV translator, TV
booster, FM translator or FM booster station;

Because the WKZE translator uses 250 watts I doubt that interference-free reception of WQXR can be had at the WQXR translator site. By the way, most Poughkeepsie area translators are 10 watts or less, albeit at greater antenna heights.

I also feel that Poughkeepsie has far too many essentially useless translators. One translator that I feel actually has a legitimate purpose is WQXR's. I think they were the first translator in this market.

I agree. I would love to see the WKZE translator just go away.

Well somebody needs to tell them that because WKZE is back on the air on 105.9 and the 103.7 WQXR Translator is a mess again.
Perhaps I should write to WQXR

Well tonight (2/8/11) WQXR on 103.7 is sounding better and WKZE's 105.9 translator is still on the air. The past few days, the WQXR signal was very noisy, but tonight the noise level is definitely an improvement. Not great, but better, and I'm actually surprised this much has been accomplished. Let's see what happens next. I hope we can get back a noise-free WQXR signal.

I was thinking if they bumped WKZE's translator up to 106.1 that would be most helpful for WQXR on 105.9.

While were at it...Why not move 103.7 down the dial to 94.9? the 103.7 translator gets pretty covered up from WNNJ south of Poughkeepsie
