WKZV's problem is not with their transmitter or the studio equipment, it is Verizon's phone line link from the transmitter to the station. Verizon has installed new digital equipment that just does not work, at least in this situation. This has been an ongoing problem for several months and Verizon's technicians have been on site numerous times but can't seem to find the solution.
The real problem is WKZV's elderly owner who will not or doesn't know how to bring the proper pressure on Verizon to solve the problem. If you don't believe me contact George Lasko and he will tell you what I have said here.
Now will this end the speculation for a while. It just amazes me that of the dozens of successful radio stations in Western Pa., this station consistently remains on or near to top of the subject lines on this message board, seemingly always. I am at a lost to figure out why that is unless it's simply a case of the vultures circling the dying carcass.
And one final thought don't start suggesting that the owner needs to install a wireless link to the transmitter, that will never happen while she owns the station.

I Care Because Stations Like WKZV are a Dying Bread Many People Got There Start at Stations Like It. The "Big Station's" want Years of Experence, Where Do you Get IT? I Volenteered at Pitts Carrier Current Station in the Late 60's Since I was not a Pitt Student I was Asked to Leave. I Started at a Small Station, Made Many Mistakes But I Also Learned alot ,My Mistakes were Pointed out to me By the station Manager. And I Corrected Them. I Want WKZV to Stay on the AIR Helping Others Get Their Start!

Agreed. For that matter, local AM radio in general is no longer a training ground.

The value of small stations as an on-air training ground is probably primarily in sports now. Some of the stations still run HS games and need inexpensive people to call play-by-play.

I usually can't resist when I drive past their towers on I-79. It's about the only place you can actually hear them.

No, not at all. I remember driving up that hill (the studios were there back then) as a 20-year-old at sunrise on a Saturday morning and how much I enjoyed it. I was lucky enough to work at some larger stations later on, but that probably the most fun I ever had in the business.

I was last on the air in 1991, so my desire to own a failing AM is less than zero. Just sentimental value for me.

Even if she wanted to sell the station, no bank will lend money for a business with no recent positive track record. The buyer would have to have alot of cash, not only for the purchase, but for operating costs as well. Or, she would have to be willing to accept monthly payments.

Of course, she is not alone. This is the nature of the AM side of our industry.

Driving Around Washington on Monday 10-8-12 Listing to WKZV ,The Record would seem to Stop, The DJ would Stop , Like Dead air in the Middle of a song or Spot. The Carrier was ON But no Modulation. Is This the Verizon Problem?

I've noticed a pattern where they've been on during the week then silent on Sunday.
Either they've suddenly taken interest in the Sabbath or perhaps some type of work is

Relying on phone or internet providers can be a bad thing when it comes to broadcasting. She won't do it but microwave hops (if possible) would certainly be a better choice for actually working and staying that way.
