WKZV transmitter issues

For those of you keeping scorecards, you may have noticed that WKZV had been off the air frequently during the day.

Polka Mike says the old Collins unit blew two tubes and they've been trying to find an engineer to fix it. They're back to 85 percent power now, and hope to be back up to 100 percent next week. Last Friday they were operating at 15 percent power and I got the station just fine (although a little distorted) in Neville Island. A thousand watts goes a long way on that little station!

A lot more than you (or even I) realize. I went to visit the folks there a week ago today, and Mike was getting at least five calls every fifteen minutes asking him if the station was off the air and/or if he knew about it. They DO listen!

Yeah, that's a lot cynical, actually. ::) I've been there on several occasions, and those phones are never quiet.

I guess I'm just surprised that the format they're running has any following at all, and that they are making enough with it to keep the lights on.

Is the studio back up on the hill? I drove by their location in Washington recently and the building is for sale/rent and looks dark.

And while I'm on the subject, I'm even more amazed that WTYM in Kittanning has a pulse.

They're still at 80 Chestnut Street. The building was recently sold (they didn't take down the sign) to Washington and Jefferson College. They might end up getting booted, since W&J, as I understand, wants the building for the college's own use. The station may have looked dark because their transmitter issues kept them off the air for five days at one point. It was bad. Just about every engineer in this area is locked up in an exclusive contract.

TYM makes its money on sports broadcasts, primarily. They do a ton of stuff tape-delayed, and they do have news sponsorships.

I agree with Part-timer, why don't they play rock and roll oldies instead of country oldies, that way we could have 57 signals in the area playing rock and roll oldies instead of 56.....and by the way when you convince them to play rock and roll oldies make sure they play the same 300 over and over again from now to enternity.

Huh?

I didn't say that... I just don't that the country oldies format is very good. I guess if I knew more country it might appeal to me a little more, but I just think they're all over the place.

And regarding WTYM, the fact that sponsors pay to be on a tape-delayed high school basketball game at 10AM on a Wednesday morning still mystifies me.

Both of these stations serve very niche audiences. KZV plays a lot of the songs you won't hear on overmarketed, overconsulted, and overrated country stations in the Pittsburgh market. They have a very deep library like we do here at WBUT. KZV plays two southern gospel songs each hour that they've actually sold as a sponsorship.

For WTYM, that station has earned a reputation as "the local sports station". If it involves high school sports, that's the station you go to. Kittanning is one of those demographics where computer-savvy people aren't in the majority. They might not know to go to Redzonemedia or NSN.com to hear those broadcasts, and it's my understanding that those games aren't carried on the internet anyway.

TYM has kind of had to go this route because it's a very tough market to sell spots the old-fashioned ROS way. You can still do it, but you have to work much harder at it, involving more people. This is a much easier sell, overhead is much less, and there are listeners who hear the broadcasts and the commercials contained therein.
