If memory serves me correctly, they are running a very old transmitter, and when it breaks it often takes several days to get the parts.

True that! They're still running the old 1968 Collins box that they went on the air with. It's a miracle they can still get parts for it.

As far as I can tell they generate virtually no income on weekdays, I think the brokered weekend stuff is the only money they have coming in.

Maybe they should broker more during the week.... not like anyone would really miss what they're doing now.....

I spoke with their tech person and he informed me that one of the OEM contactors failed. Of course, they are no longer available. However, he was able to rebuild an old one. They are still running at 250 watts.

By the way, the station is for sale. I think they would like to get 50 thousand. As thou someone would pay that much. Although they do have 6 acres of nice land at the xmtr. site.

$50K would be too much of they had a good facility, let alone the amount of money it would take to make it viable again.

Maybe time to hand this one back to the FCC......

whoever buys this station will have to invest in a new xmtr. Armstrong has a solid state unit for around 9 thousand. Of course, Bernie Wise will sell them a new Energy-Onix for thirty-five dollars and a box of Milky Ways.

Has anyone had any experience with the Energy-Onix 1 KW?

Their antenna system seems to be fairly stable.

They could also shut down and lease the towers to cell companies.

Yes, that's more like it.....for $50K I might just be crazy enough to think about taking out a second mortgage on the house and going for it. Almost, that is.....

1250WTAE. Your are correct Sir! At least up until about 10 days ago they wanted around 200K. However, the station is eating them alive and they want out. They will entertain any offer, reasonable or unreasonable. The studio is in Wash., so they have rent and utilities. They have 2 live jocks during the week and a couple of part timers on the weekends.

Most of their revenue comes from weekend blocks. Although, I did hear a Dean's Water commercial the other day.

Whoever buys it must purchase a new xmtr. Also, the xmtr. building is now a raccoon's nest and is in terrible shape....so a new, small block structure must be put up.

It's very sad. They are nice people and I hope they can get out from under all this. Of course, they can turn in the license and sell the real property.

The transmitter building is a trailer that wasn't in great shape when I worked there (then WKEG) 30 years ago. It was originally the studio as well, then it moved into a small office space downtown. The WKEG logo is still painted on the side of that building, I think the current studios are a couple of blocks away.

They are literally generating no income 5 days a week, just selling a few blocks on the weekends. It could probably be viable for brokered programming if the signal was better. Back when the transmitter was in good shape the station came in over most of the South Hills.

I always had a dream to own a station, while not viable the thought of 50K to get in the door made me ponder.... But 200K just puts that right back out of mind....

ScottyBman. Jim Trefney indicated that the signal was strong at his locale. Remember, they are running at one forth power (250 watts). Get it up to 1kw and the signal level will double.

What do you think would work? How about local Wash. County talk? You could still sell weekend blocks.

Also, if you can maintain the null toward WTAM you may be able to get a power increase.

email me if you want some additional info.

I still do not have any problems getting them in the South Hills, although I have to rotate the radio to a very tight alignment with the null. Getting them in the car while moving is tricky.

They have some vines climbing their north tower which has to shunt some of the RF energy to ground. When they clean that up and get back to a kilowatt they should have a decent signal. Of course with all of the QRM coming from power transformers and sodium lights, etc. all AM's have less than their optimum coverage.
