WLAC AM Sports show

What happened to the sports show that used to air on WLAC in the afternoon/early evenings. Did Clear Channel decide it didn't want live bodies in the studio at that time of day? It went away several years ago and came back in another form a year or so back. The new version with Hamblin and the crew wasn't nearly as good as their predecessors,Bob Bell, Bill King and crew., but I used to listen to them in the winter time anyway over here in Memphis. Now all I get on 1510 is Glen Beck......and his batting average sucks.

WLAC should add Mark Levin from 10PM-12AM instead of airing more C2C now the primetime sports is only 2 hours.

Yes the good ole days when Bob Bell, Bill King and Doug Mathews hosted that show. This was back in the days before the Titans moved into town. Most of the talk revolved around college football, mostly UT Vols football. King covered college football recruiting in those days. I think King has backed off the recruiting thing on his current show on 560 WNSR, but when someone calls to ask about some big time college football prospect, King still has the information about the kid.

This show was a nice, laid back show without the mean spirited, confrontational elements that sports talk radio generates now. This was back before the days of college message forums and the ole who can talk the best smack talk. Blame the current sophomoric chatter of college football sports talk on the influences of that evil thing that we all now enjoy called "the Internet". LOL

I never will forget when ESPN led the Northern media in a campaign to push Charles Woodson over Peyton Manning for the 1997 Heisman. Many people from outside the south called the show to tangle with Bell who seemed to get ticked off about all of this anti Peyton Manning talk far more than King got ticked off. The chat was interesting and everyone seemed to get along with one another. Bell always seemed to say nice things about Tennessee's rivals and all was right with the world.

Then shortly after, WLAC brought in the Michale Savage program. When I first heard this guy, I thought he was a flaming nut. I knew Savage would not catch on with Nashville listeners, but I think he surprised some people with enough ratings to survive at least for a short time.

Anyway, a great show while it lasted. Funny, in just about 10 years, Nashville has become more like other NFL towns in sports talk radio.

Michael Savage, whose real name is Michael Weiner, is a bigot and I didn't understand why WLAC would want his show. However, it's not the first time WLAC tried someone that hateful and controversial. In the early '90s, the station had a local host named Debbie Ellis, who was one of the most hateful talk show hosts I've ever heard. She was an extreme left bigot, while Savage is an extreme right bigot.

Then no surprise to anyone, but the brain trusts over at Crumulast decided “Hey that show sucks, lets run it!” Guess it fits WTN’s agenda, Phil hates Mexicans, Savage hates Gays and everyone hates anyone who is not a White Anglo-Saxon Protestant male! When Hillary takes the white house, I hope her first official act is to make listening to WTN a hate crime, and have the station flipped to rock!

If listening to certain radio programs is made a hate crime, I suggest we start with Randi Rhodes, who called for the President's murder.

He has trashed WASPs, Catholics and every other group you can imagine. Savage hates Christians as much as he hates other groups and people. He has a history of comments against Christians and Jews. Savage, whose real name is Michael Weiner, is a self-hating Jew, sort of a far-right counterpart to the far-left Amy Goodman. Savage in reality seems to hate everyone. Sadly (as I see it), there are people who listen to him.

When Bill Buntin was SM over WLAC, I suggested to him that bring back the Blues & Gospel Music programming in the overnight would be a good thing for WLAC, but the problem was that Clear Channel wanted money for that time, which I don't blame them. Clear Channel I guess didn't think selling chicken eggs at your doorstep would make enough money to pay the AC bill at the transmitter.

I don't stay up that late at night to hear this nut, but all this slandering he does, it's a wonder he doesn't need to have bodyguards escourting him out of the building after his show. Calling Rush a Young Democrat? The next thing this dude might say is that Rush is ____________ Hillary! Hey Al Gore, an ice storm is about to hit Cartridge, TN. Global Warming, LOL!

Fred, let me see if I have this figured out. You say no one in Middle Tennessee listens to Savage unless said listener is in the Klan. Then you go into some description of Savage's show, its content, etc. Either you have disqualified your "no listener" hypothesis or your Klan sheets are at the cleaners.

I've heard a tape of it....didn't hear the show live....but there was audio out there on the 'Net. She made reference to a mob-style shooting. At the very least, it was in poor taste. She later claimed it was a joke.
