WLAC changes schedule

I just heard that WLAC is changing their schedule. Their only local daytime show will be Steve Gill, from 5-8am. Now, all of the top syndicated shows will air in pattern (Beck at 8am, Rush at 11, Hannity at 2, and Levin at 5).

Gill moves from 8-11am, and Rick & Bubba will no longer air. Sad that a station like WLAC is down to three local hours a day.

I beleive a couple of contracts at WWTN are running out .....

I hope that Ralph Bristol won't leave WWTN or Michael, and you can forget losing Phil Valentine.

Leave? If you mean voluntarily, then Ralph, no. But not having contracts renewed? And BTW Del Giorno is so disgusted with Cumulus he can't wait to get out

Syndicated shows like Rush & Hannity very are popular around the country, and more of them are popping up. WLAC is not the only station doing this. This is a trend across the country. As long as WLAC does offer Local News, Up to date weather info, I see no problem with it. As long as WLAC interrupts programming when bad weather is coming or we have a local crisis in Nashville, I see no problem with this.

What we have to remember is that WLAC has the best numbers for an AM Station in Nashville. The economy is not doing well, and this is saving them money. We need to just hope that Rush gets over his physical problems and gets well soon. He has a huge audience in this country.

Not to get off track of WLAC, WSM is what bothers me. They are local with jocks, but they don’t seem to break in fast enough with local weather information like they once did. I assume they are not voice tracked. If they are, they don’t sound like it. When I listen to WSM, it always sounds live. If I’m in the car, and bad weather appears in the sky, I have a button on my car radio set for 650. Out of habit, I’ve always relied on WSM for the latest weather bulletins and 1510 WLAC. The two best AM Stations in Nashville.

Michael's not stupid, he had to know what he was getting into. I have decided to try to be positive in 2010 about Cumulus, so perhaps they will realize that Ralph and Michael have bonded with many listeners. I could see Michael D going national at some point, although, I have to point out that Ladytalk's posts a while back do point to the fact that he may have a tough time getting stations to pick him up. I hope R & B don't show up on the FM. We need local and live. And Gwen (sp?) has is quite enjoyable to listen to, IMHO.

I listened to WLAC this morning and it was obvious that Steve Gill is on LIVE this mroning doing his show from 5-8 AM. How does this affect his show as it is carried in other markets? Will it be live from 5-8 AM CST (6-9 AM EST) or will air on a Delay? What other markets in the State does it air on because it no longer airs in the Knoxville market like it did when it first went statewide.

What kind of ratings did Rick & Bubba pull in Nashville? They always seemed to be a strange fit on WLAC.

R&B's ratings were just ok.
I wish Nashville had a true news operation in morning drive. R&B are corn ball and originate from a country station in B'ham. Figures. But Gill is no more a morning show than Limbaugh is Martha Stewart. Gill beats a one topic drum and I understand he's arousing the choir to sing "amen" but I can't listen to them seriously.
Tennessean seems short staffed for news. WLAC doesn't do much news. Maybe Nashville doesn't have much news to report. I'll be curious when bad weather and school closings kick in to see which station has their act together for being on top of a flood of info. I predict WSIX FM. I just don't see WLAC or WSM being anything like a solid news organization anymore.

Fair question. I don't have a great answer and on second thought your question raises a good point. Why did I blurt out WSIX-FM. It's not because of any glaring interest in news demonstrated by WSIX FM but more a feeling that Gerry House is just on top of stuff. Even with Voecks gone, Bohan or somebody has enough time and interest to try and get the info,
Truthfully, I suspect most Nashville radio stations would just steal the school closing info from channel 5 or 4. And sadly, I bet most moms would get school closing & weather info from tv as well. And we both remember a time not long ago when that would not have been the case.
Forgetting this thread that centered on AM stations and looking at the total radio picture (FM/AM) who would you say would have the perception of delivering school closing and road conditions best in Nashville. And which station would Metro & surrounding county schools call. Or is this now TV's job.

Waiting for the school or system you're interested in to come around on the TV crawl is a pain. I just either go to a station's website so I can see the whole list at once or go to the school's site (if updated) to see if it's closed.

I get school closings on my I-Phone. Why wait for another corny joke or inside converstion to get valuable school info, especially if your child is affected.
Radio is NOT the information medium it used to be 5 years ago.
Sad, but true.

WOW. do the replies from jetfli and jharmon speak volumes or what!

I'd love to know who the dudes with Metro and Williamson county, etc., call first...it starts somewhere. I'd have loved to see research from a wide source of which radio station average people would go to first...if only to see where WLAC, WTN, or a music station ranks. Maybe radio is a "who cares" place for weather...and news.

No one brought this up. It probably does not matter. I made a comment that Gill is NOT a morning show. I'm watching PPM's effect on a lot of new ratings numbers. Actual time spent listening is NOT what everybody thought it was, apparently. I recently watched a guy in Tampa, Mark Larsen, seemingly be affected by this. His name recognition is high, having been there forever. In diaries he had top 10 numbers.
But in PPM he was 29th. People bore of repetitive topics that seem to go on and on and nowhere at that. Whether it's Obama is the anti-Christ or the convention center will ruin us, it's apparent in city after city having a topic of interest is hard. Keeping listeners is harder. Exaggerated statements and scare talk that stirs up people works some days for Gill or Valentine or Limbaugh or Hannity, but more and more people seem to be saying "are you kidding me?" and moving on. Maybe it's more a cynical crowd we serve but there is a pattern . Morning drive needs to move and be sharp and crisp, focused and with purpose, not rambling looking for more calls to say "you're the smartest guy ever Steve. " etc

I enjoy hearing the Channel 5 weather personalities' recorded updates on The Zone, just to be generally informed of what's up weather-wise. But when I must know more current or detailed weather conditions, I'll check Channel 2's weather sidechannel or nashvillewx.com. However, if we're under immediate storm threat, I'll tune in Channel 5's HD weather coverage. If I'm in a car under immediate storm threat, I'll search for a station talking weather... if my wife hasn't already called to inform me what's going on...

any one miss all those calls from the 10 year old kids.."is it gonna snow..and if it does..is there school tomorrow ?" ;D
