WLAM STEREO 1470....WHAT HAPPENED TO IT?

Hi, I used to report and anchor news on WLAM, which had a stereo AM signal at 1470 when i worked there from 1984 to 1987. Just wondering if the station is still in existance after all these years. It was top 40 back then, while their soft rock FM station ...Kiss 100...eventually went automated during my time there. ASome of the people who were there at the time were News Director Craig Robbins, Meteorologist Dick Richards, Program Director Mike Lawrence and jocks such as (these are air names) Scott Carpenter, Tommy Sandman, Donna Steele. I had a ball working there, but lost touch with everyone after I left the state. i know it's been 25 years, but does anyone know where any of these people are, or if the station is still around. Can't find it in Lewiston-Auburn any longer. Studios were in Auburn and the Station Manager was Ron Frizzell. Thanks in advance. ;D

it's still around, under Nassau ownership.......it's been a couple different formats: adult standards, liberal talk, i think it was part of the WMTW Newsradio simulcast and now carries Scott Shannon's True Oldies format.

I had the pleasure of working for Ron Frizell in sales in the early 90's. Ron is the ultimate radio man, brimming over with enthusiasm and wonderfully supportive of his people. I'm so glad he got back into radio after selling all of his Maine stations. Ron belongs in radio, and radio needs guys like him.

One of my co-workers in the sales at the time was Don Zihlman, who was the incredible hi-energy morning man on WLAM 1470 in the late 70s and perhaps into the 80s. A super, super guy who sadly passed away about a year ago.

WLAM in the early 90s was airing a sattelite-delivered standards format. For a salesperson, Kiss 100 was the big kahuna, and although we often tried to sell 'LAM, it was tough. For us, an adult contemporary FM was more worthy of our effort than an upper-demo AM, even though WLAM was near and dear to Ron's heart.

On air folks at WLAM/Kiss at that time included Mark Erickson (PD, now at WOKQ), Chris Lane - with that beautiful, booming voice, Karhy Williamson, and Dave Bailey.

I was only there for a year or so, but I really appreciated the family feeling of the place fostered by Ron Frizell.

Thanks everyone for the updates on WLAM and its personnel. glad to know it's still around in one form or another, and that Ron Frizzel is still in radio after all these years. found out that Criag Robbins, who was News director at WLAM in the mid-80s, went to Memphis where he became a well known and respected newsman. Sadly, he died about two years ago at the age of 58.

davalvideo, I used to work at WLAM part time during the time you were there. A bunch of Old WLAM jocks have put together an internet radio station, including dick richards, rick davis, dan lawrencem bob perry and myself, check it out at http://www.wqry106.com

Ron Frizzell------Great radio guy. But here's what I also remember about Ron Frizzell

1. Low balled on air talent in salary

2. Folks had to cough up money each week for coffee...

3. Ron charged a nickel more per can of soda to pay for the electricity that ran the soda machine. True.

WLAM was a great sounding AM station in its day. Ron gets credit for that.

WLAM is a station in search of a good owner. It has had a different format every 2 years. Presently, it does Shannon's True Oldies some of the time. Mornings are leased out to the 1510-Boston morning show (Joe Santos), and WMTW-TV has portions of the morning drive & afternoon drive for simulcasting TV news.

Wow, another DA-1 for my very small list!

I was lucky enough to contact one of my former colleagues at WLAM, former On-Air Talent and Engineer Bob Perry. He and a few other WLAM alums including weatherman Dick Richards are still on the air and playing great music on an internet station in Maine. Thanks everyone for all of your updates.
