WLAN New Power

They seem to be getting out during the day about as well as they did with 5kw in my direction to the west. They never did come in at night. The last time I was in Lancaster County, the night signal didn't make it north of the airport. I think they were still at the old tower sight at that time, which was last December.

I was in the northern part of Lancaster County over the weekend. The signal sounded improved...or at least cleaner than the 4 tower directional 5kw. Nights.....well...with 18 watts you can't expect much.....but the signal could be heard....which was an improvement over what the 1kw night directional signal had become in recent years.

The night signal is already flagging at Columbia Avenue by WGAL-TV, gets a little worse, then picks up again around Good Drive. You can hold it on a car radio on Rt. 30 to around Centerville Road, but after that it's gone. It's 18 watts. It is what it is. Likely no one is listening at night anyway.

WOW! Gets all the way to Rt 30 and Centerville Rd? I would imagine that in the city you would get hum from the traffic lights. I've heard this on other flea power night signals.

....and they just became..."Your Hometown Christmas Station"...now according to all the consultants advise this move would be a guarantee ratings winner!

"If you're not first to flip....you lose"...

Sorry. With 3 FMS (WDAC, Rose, and WARM) getting into the Christmas scene soon, an AM station has no shot----no matter when they flip. Vegas would put their money on Rose or DAC to win this fight.

All Christmas IS a ratings winner......ON FM!!! Why would WLAN would put this on AM? Because it costs them NOTHING. It's all Clear Channel's Premium Choice programming. They just let it run...and keep the licence.

All Christmas may not be a ratings boost for an AM,
but speaking from experience it does generate sales.
Its a warm and fuzzy feature that clients like.
December billing on my AM is always very good due in part
to Holiday programming.

Opry's right--from a programming standpoint it's just flat stupid when you know 3 FMs are going to switch and bury you. But if they sold it well, that's all that matters. The four most important words in radio are "brought to you by..." At WQXA 1250 back in '94, we did 20% of our billing for the YEAR in December because of all-Christmas. Back then we were the only ones to go, and the ratings doubled.

BL you are right. That was very successful for 1250 back then.
It got a lot of in office listening and many retail shops around
town were playing it.
You would have never thought back at that time that there would be
multiple FM's in the market switching to All Christmas programming
now; programmers back then would not have given it even the slightest
consideration. Of course people said the same about NASCAR on radio.
We were the first to broadcast in on 1250 as WNOW back years ago, but
by the mid 90's , people discovered what a revenue boost it was and
the FM's started going after it. In 1994 Both GTY AND Z-107 tried to get
MRN's contract in York, I was able to keep it exclusively on WOYK through
the end of 1998.
