URBan Radio filed a last-minute STA to keep the licenses from being deleted, and it was granted yesterday. The stations are reported to be on the air now, with WVNA transmitting with 2,000 watts daytime only from a temporary antenna at the WQLT-FM site south of Florence. The format is said to be rock, with WVNA-FM liners, but not a direct simulcast. WLAY is broadcasting with 60 watts if I remember correctly, from a longwire between two poles behind the URBan studios in Tuscumbia, and is playing country with WLAY-FM liners, again no simulcast or commercials or announcers.
Is there some sort of rule that an STA like this can't just simulcast a co-owned station directly? Seems like a spot of bother to go through to program them the same as their FM counterparts but not simulcast directly.
Allegedly reportedly URBan claims to have a buyer for the stations, finally. So they may see the light of day yet. But it's Urban, so I don't hold my breath.
