Many HD receiver manufacturers fail to promote their use of circuitry which decodes both AM stereo and analogue R(B)DS.

I am not an engineer, but we do have an AM stereo processor in the rack not hooked up. One of you engineer types school me on what I would need. Is the processor all I need or ????? How would it affect the regular radios? Would they only hear one channel?

The only issue with transmitting C-QUAM stereo is that if you want to also have asymetrical modulation (125% positive peaks) your balance will be off center on some stereo receivers. This is my experience with more than one unit.

I've dabbled in engineering (built studios, patched audio into xmtrs., etc.). What the airchain would look like would be this: STUDIO->EAS->Stereo Processor->Transmitter (with a stereo exciter which may also be around). Anyone listening on a mono radio would only hear the mono signal because the way C-QuAM works is that there's a left plus right (mono) signal and a left minus right (stereo) signal riding out of phase. So, here's a checklist:

1. Are the air & production boards stereo?
2. Are the audio playback devices (computers, C.D. players, cassette players, record players, etc.) bridged to mono (left and right tied together) either in the back where the audio wires plug in (using a Y connector) or in the board? Basically, an easy way to check all of this is to play a song with extreme stereo in it (something like "Lightning Strikes" by Lou Christie) & if you hear the left & right coming from the left and right as in the song, you're stereo up to that point. If it sounds like it's coming from the middle, you've got mono somewhere.
3. Assuming that everything through here is stereo, the E.A.S. should also not be bridged. It should pass left and right independently.
4. The audio processor would have to be check to make sure it's clean. If so, it can go back to being the primary audio processor. What kind is it & what are you using now?
5. If the transmitter is still the one for stereo (assuming it was at one point), there should still be some exciter or card that generates the stereo. If it's made after 1993 it'll be C-QuAM. Before 1993 it may be one of the other systems which were competing at the time. Those were: Kahn/Hazeltine, Magnavox, Harris. Believe it or not, all of this could be check within 5 minutes!

I'll answer as many as I can. Transmitter is a seven year old Harris and is very strong. All audio is stereo in studio and bridged to mono - don't know where. Station runs off of computers and mp3s, six hours a day live talk, music the rest of the time. Have an Optimod 9200 Digital processor now - the rack listed as stereo is a CRL Systems SPP 800, SEP 800, and a SMP900.

You guys are the best.

The 9200 itself is only mono (as is the 9300 but NOT the 9400-that's stereo) so it could be there or just before that. Maybe the CRL gear could be tested soon! I'll let you know if anyone around there from the AM Stereo list can help.

Listening to the online stream I did hear one or two oldies that sounded out of phase. Sounds like the audio source could have been a couple of things (except vinyl ;D) It was during the 4-6pm segment on Monday I believe. Might want to look into that first.

I still keep trying to remember to listen for this DJMo guy!

DJ Mo is on now - currently playing Alley Oop. Playing some Motown and 70's dance 4-6 today.

Thanks for all of the input - there may be a diamond in the rough in my equipment racks.

That combination can sound very good when set up correctly, however those units are old enough that if they have seen heavy use in the past, they may be due for having the electrolytic capacitors replaced.

Manuals (including schematics and parts lists) for those units can be downloaded from Orban's FTP site:
ftp://ftp.orban.com/CRL/

The folks at Orban are still happy to answer questions and provide advice on CRL equipment. They also have most parts available for all three of those processors.

I just dropped a small fortune on my car at Shaffer Motors in Eustis. I told them I heard their ad on WLBE and they were extremely happy. I hope that everyone will support the station's sponsors and tell them they heard their spot on the station. Whether we're discussing AM stereo or Dj Mo (or anything else for that matter), it's the financial health of WLBE that will determine if the oldie format succeeds or not. It certainly hope that it does.

That's always a good idea to let the sponser know that their ad was heard on WLBE or any other station you listen to as well...... especially for local businesses, who I think are sometime hesitant to advertise. I've done the same.
--------
AM stereo, as far as that goes, I believe if it already hasn't happened, Mr Walter should be getting an email from an S Todd or M Richards from the AM stereo forum list, as both are aware of the situation and both have put AM stereo stations on the air.

Originally when WVLG first signed on the air as WHOF (Heart of Florida) in either 1986 or 1987, they were AM stereo; then several years later and a new owner the AM stereo was dropped but at some point resumed. Like FM stereo, the sound comes through on both speakers on a mono radio, that is not a problem and usually even on a regular AM radio, it sounds better, even if not in stereo, due to the extended bandwidth usually being more than the usual 5Db.

I listened on and off Tuesday afternoon to DJ MO (great pipes and I'm sorry to all the critics, but I liked the delivery.... I would like time and current temperature checks, but I realize things are still being fine tuned.) Then later I heard OK Walters play hits from 1973 and that was enjoyable, never heard side kick AL Wright, but have to admit was listening on and off in the car as I did errands in East Hernando. (did hear an advertisement for a car dealer - Matthews Ford? - in Brooksville, as well as another ad for a rafting place between Brooksville and Bushnell, so someone is really pounding the pavement to get advertisers.

Is WVLG currently in stereo?
I have no reason to believe they are; the last time I went through there with my Panasonic Japanese model boombox that shows an
AM stereo pilot light (about 2 years go), they were not, I've been through the Villages as recently as last month, but did not have an AM stereo radio to check it out.

I suspect from some of the comments on this board, from people in or near The Villages (John H) that they are not and if they are, they sure don't promote or menton it.

drt,
st. petersburg (which is and has been an AM stereo free zone for several years)

Thank you very much - that means alot to everyone at WLBE. We are doing the best we can, and with the help of people like you, we will succeed.

Thanks again - everyone on this board is a great help

so am I suppose to assume that if the stream says chunklist as the title and there is dead air that there is live talk on OTA but you dont stream that via the web?
Your nighttime pattern doesn't make it out this far .
Villages AM is a mish-mash of noise and foren language, at night .

The stream should be running 24/7 - we have had some comments about dead air and cutting in and out, so we may have a bandwidth issue already. The stream and its reliability is next on my long list.

Yes, we have all local sponsors and have added almost 20 new ones in the last two months due to our new auction show. Things are going VERY well - better than I hoped. The community has embraced the changes and we have had virtually no negative comments on the format changes. We are adding HS sports in February with softball and baseball two or three nights per week, and local business Romac Lumber will be the title sponsor of our coverage.

I can't thank this group enough for your help and guidance.

The O.K. and Al Wright Show - it's always O.K. & Al Wright with O.K. and Al Wright. Get it?

There really is an "Al Wright" though - stay tuned for some laughs when he comes on this coming week.

Listening to the O.K. & Al Wright show right now...good show, professional delivery, runs a good board. Quality radio program. By the way...thanks for the Rick Nelson song...

Yes, I get it now! I was more than a little slow on the uptake!! :)

Was listening today from just before 2pm until about 4:30, I even enjoyed the coupon book/restaurant banter just before the DJ MO show and again, the music and presentation of both music shows was outstanding.

It's nice to hear music and anything but political talk for hours on end, on the AM band.

Finally got to check the station out and finally want to offer one suggestion.
This page is rather combersome, design one in a grid form as do most non-coms. The eyes should be able to flow vertically and horizontally to find commonalities and variations throughout the broadcast week.
