WLBH Mattoon Signal

Looking for a second opinion. Traveling through the area, it appears that WLBH 96.9 has an exceptionally poor signal. On the Indiana/Illinois border, I heard a weak mix of Paris,KY at 194 miles and Paducah,KY at 170 miles. WLBH is 45 miles from there--no trace of their claimed 50KW at 500' signal. WLBH started to be audible around highway 130 & I-70 (21 miles out). Did I hear them on a bad day or does WLBH's signal sound more like a few hundred watts than 50KW?

I dont see any STA on file, but maybe a part failed and they were at low power.

I didn't see anything on file either, but clearly, this one isn't (or at least wasn't) performing like it should be. Hopefully someone else near WLBH can tell me my observation was either right or wrong in terms of how well this station is actually getting out. I often here 92.1 from Charleston (6KW) but haven't heard WLBH's 50KW in years. It was there pretty well daily many years ago. Is it just me, or does the station not know it's not up to par or do they know & have discovered that operating with low power saves on the electric bill? Unless I just caught them on a bad day (Lord knows we all have had them), there's a story here.

It's been like that at least since 2003. It's probably operating on a few hundred watts like you said. I don't know how they haven't been shut down. The past few times I was down there they weren't running any IDs or commercials or anything, just straight satellite music.

It's a shame. What a waste of a frequency.

There has been extensive discussion for a few years of the travesty of Mattoon Radio on "The Gateway City Radio Board." I suggest you Google it and note the volume of comments and photos.

At least it makes it easier to FM DX in the region. I went to the GWCR site & searched both Mattoon & WLBH under the Illinois board & it offered no results for either. What Google search term produced the desired results? I enjoy seeing photos of "less than well maintained" radio stations...sounds like Mattoon may have something to offer in that category.

I looked too.

My friend in Quincy has sent me pictures of "less then well maintained" studios and tower sites he's seen across Illinois.
