WLEC 1450 AM on FM?

Just something I'd throw out there...how well do you think an FM version of WLEC would do? WLEC 1450 AM is an adult standards/classic soft rock station that broadcasts from Sandusky. They could broadcast on 106.9 which is an open frequency in the Sandusky area. This would provide better coverage at night. Again just wanted to see what others opinions were on this. This would be similar to what WMPX 1490/WMRX 97.7 do in the Midland, MI area.

I love the format on WLEC. In fact if I owned an AM station this would be one of three formats I would put on the AM band. Talk has been way too overdone. I applaud the station for the coverage of high school sports, news and local talent.

With all that being said would I put the format on FM? No. If you have an AM with WLEC's format I would consider one of two formats for the FM (if country is pretty well covered in the market).

I would go with a really high energy fun oldies station. Or I woud go with an Breeze or Warm light AC format. A WARM 98 in Cincinnati would be a good example of the format.

On the oldies you could go with either a Classic oldies with 60's ,70's and 80's or go to good time oldies of the 50's, 60's and 70's.I would go with the latter. Depending on the budget= make sure you are live in morning and afternoon drive then go with a Dial Global for the other day parts and week ends.

Whatever you do on the FM - the local talent must be everywhere on the streets and be involved in a numnber of NTR events.

I would love to have the chance of programming a station like that. The station will generate buzz and with the right GM ad sales force a strong revenue base.

If you do sports on the FM - you might look at gong beyond doing ony Sandusky games and look at doing games through out the coverage area and make it a Big game on Friday night. you shoud expect upwards to better than $3,000 on Friday night coverage alone.

Thanks for putting the question out there.

I really enjoy the programming on WLEC too. The Mark Fogg morning show is great with his TV theme trivia and the 'genius awards' The music is great. I was just imagining if they had an FM simulcast and perhaps put the local sports coverage on the FM channel to provide better coverage at night for when the AM signal gets too much interference. I live in Vermilion and work in Lorain and the AM signal is hard to pick up in the early morning hours when it's still dark due to the co-channel interference but an FM simulcast would make it easier to listen to. Again it seems 106.9 would be the best frequency to put it on as you'd only have WRQK/Canton to protect.

If BAS hadn't turned 100.9 The Coast into a Country, they could have simulcast it on 100.9 FM out of Bellevue, but that's getting into the territory the other BAS station is with the same feed (1600, WTTF, Tiffin). You can listen live to WLEC mornings on your phone, since they have the stream going. I do think the Cathy Taylor mid-day voice should move to overnights, since she has a very nice, soothing voice & move Billy Shears (obviously a Beatles fan) to middays.
Off topic, goodbye to former WLEC/WCPZ/WMJK employee Nick Vincent, who had been doing mornings on WLKR. Nick has gotten completely out of the business.

Sad to hear about Nick Vincent leaving the business. He had really made WLKR enjoyable to listen to. Does anyone know what happened?
