WLIL-AM 730 Wins the Classic Country Battle!!

They come and they go, but in the end 'The Legendary AM 730 WLIL' stands strong in Classic Country land... ;D ;D

IT IS OFFICIAL...Coming home from 850...

"Marshal Andy Presents: The Marshal Andy Show - Featuring Eddy Arnold, Marshal Andy, and Others"
ON WLIL-AM 730 - starting Friday, May 17th. 10:30 - 11:30 Eastern.

WLIL's own 'Stormin' Norman Rhyne will be Andy's producer...

Marshal Andy (Smalls) is an East Tennessee Public Television, stage, and radio icon who is best known for his Waffle House restaurant chain singing commercial "Meet Me At The Waffle House." and also is the host for the 'Riders Of The Silver Screen' TV show Saturdays at 10:30 on East Tennessee Public Television. (PBS)

WLIL-AM 730 now has six decades of service history to Loudon County and the greater East Tennessee area, broadcasting since 1950. The station website is http://www.wlilcountry.com.

WLIL sounded pretty good last summer. I give the station credit for hanging with the format.

Only difference was WLIL was mostly automated and sounded automated. WKVL had more
DJ involvement and personality.

IIRC he moved to Loudon County a few years back. He was a great TV pitch man back in the day, too. A real gentleman and a class act all around.

WLIL is serving their community well and have for years. I wish they would add more "LIVE" announcers during the daytime hours other than the trading post show in the morning. The guy pulling the purse strings probably won't let long enough to do that.

Considering the sloppiness going on with some other East Tennessee stations, WLIL will likely pick up the soon to be displaced WKVL classic country listeners. I wish WLIL the best.

I agree, listening online, WLIL sounds good but would be better with live jocks. I like hearing Kyle Cantrell on the IDs. I listen in TuneIn radio app but notice it won't always connect to WLIL - especially Saturday mornings during the syndicated Jim Ed Brown show. I'm sorry for the loss of 850 - it was good to hear country there again remembering listening to WIVK on 850 many years ago. Aren't WYSH/WGAP also still in the classic country battle in the Knoxville area? The voiceover guy is the ultimate "puker" announcer who over-pronounces every word but good stations, too.

WLIL holds a place in my mind because years ago I was driving on Rt. 321 & I thought I was headed toward Maryville but WLIL kept getting clearer - suddenly there was a lake & sign "Welcome to Lenoir City" & I realized I was going in the wrong direction - but WLIL's signal sounded great in town!

I know this is not a transportation board, however your reference to "321" and "wrong direction" perked my ears to something that has frustrated me for many years with TDOT - but I've given up on arguing with them because they are the government and they think they're smarter than anyone else. By chance, were you headed the wrong direction based only upon your observation of NORTH or SOUTH on the US 321 signs?

I totally agree with the above post quoted. Is Fred Giles still at WLIL? I bought some singing CDs of the late Pastor & Mrs. Buck Ledford from him several years ago, when he was producing a remaking of The Soul Winning Gospel Hour, Brother Ledfords long-time radio broadcast. Love 'em albums! BTW, last time I saw WLIL's Program Log, they were very lacking in the local preachers on Sunday, IMHO. Wonder what's going on there?

Josh,

I believe they have something like 9 or 10 programs running on Sunday throughout the day. Most
were based in nearby towns in Tennessee and I believe there may have been one from Ringgold, GA.

The person who responded to me from WLIL was named Norman Rhyne.

So many folks have negative comments about stations these days that whenever we travel and I hear a station/jock doing something on the air that is enjoyable, I drop them a line and let them know. I like WLIL, and I did like WKVL when it was classic country. I wrote a note to both stations last summer and got a response from both.

Ah yes, Stormin Norman. He and Glen Mcnish are the only warm bodies that hang out at the station on a full time basis. He frequents this board and might chime in.

I'm glad they are still a Lenoir City station and serving Loudon County but a desire for them to add some more live content would help them a lot. I realize you have to have the blessing of your owner and he isn't a radio person so I guess it is what it is.

Alan, thanks for the reply. WLIL is doing right by serving their community and has a good sound, but IMHO, (at least last time I saw their log or heard them) they were coming short in the local preachers department.
The preacher from Ringgold, GA is Pastor James Langston, with The Back To Calvary Broadcast. He's probably been on there for years, to his and their credit. I believe he's still on WDEH-AM and WECO-AM, along with WFLI. He is very well thought of and loved all over Eastern TN and Northern GA. He pastors Hillcrest Baptist church near Chattanooga and I can't figure out how to spell the town's name. LOL!

I have been a WLIL fan for many years. My only wishes presently would be more live and local and an FM station back with the WLIL-FM call sign.

Josh,

Thanks for the background info.

It has been roughly a year since I listened to WLIL. The in-laws are in poor health and the
house in Madisonville appears to have a buyer, so don't know if I will be in tne area very much anymore.

I am in the process of applying for an LPFM down here in North Florida.
