WLIP'S IRENE BURI-NELSON DIES IN CAR ACCIDENT

Radio Personality Irene Buri-Nelson, longtime host of the "Around Town" radio show on WLIP-AM (1050) in Kenosha, was killed Friday morning (July 7th) in a two-car crash in the Town of Somers, authorities said.

The crash occurred shortly before 9:30am. The car Buri-Nelson was driving west on Highway A was struck broadside by a car traveling north on Highway 31, the Kenosha County Sheriff's Department said.

Buri-Nelson, 84, was taken to St. Catherine's Medical Center, where she died shortly after 11am.

A 19-year old man driving the Toyota and two male passengers, both 18, were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Buri-Nelson's 'Around Town' radio show was broadcast on WLIP weekdays from 11 to 11:30am. She had been the host of the show for six decades.

Irene was the first woman inducted in the Wisconsin Broadcasting Association's Hall of Fame, and was an original employee of WLIP, (founded by the late William Lipman) which started from a basement under a seven story bank building at 625 57th Street in Kenosha in 1947.
