WLIR translater now relaying 98.5's tropical format?

That's what I've been hearing. It's a real shame, 96.9 got into areas of central Suffolk where 107.1 was too weak or drowned out by The Peak. 98.5 has a stronger signal, they needed a simulcast like a hole in the head.
I guess being that Bald Hill is in Farmingville and all.....
 
I think they made a smart choice. Lets face it, LIR is dead. Once it was off 92.7, who cares. LIR was never popular in Suffolk and never made an impact. Look at MJC, they tried an LIR type format and failed big time. 96.9 covers brentwood, Islip and a hightly concetrated hispanic pop where 98.5 faded out due to KJOY. Think business folks, this is business and good business at that. Say what you want about LIR and 98.5, but this is going to make money.
 
I completely agree with you about the intelligence of the business decision. My comment was personal and based on my love of the format. From a business perspective I have little doubt you are correct on most counts. However WMJC never really picked up the 'LIR format, just a couple of their jocks. There failure is more about a lack of both creativity and signal. That station seems to have its loyal family of advertisers and does well enough for Barny's purposes. And WLIR's cultural impact was extremely significant, if not its numbers.
 
I had high hopes for the translator on 96.9, as I was able to listen to WLIR for most of my commute to work between Selden and Melville.
While I was glad to be able to 'LIR music again, the station didn't have much personality like the 'LIR I remember did.
If this switch on 96.9 to La Fiesta is permanent (or as permanent as things seem to be for TMO), it would be better to just pull the plug on 107.1, so I can at least hear The Peak clearly.
 
It may be a smart choice but, as a fan of alternative rock, I don't like it.
They've been trying to kill this format or years.
They're probably succeed this time around.
 
Ive been reading the posts regarding the tropical format on 98.5 and I think we can all admit there was a lot of skepticism regarding the format. Now they have the translater which expands their listening area to all of Suffolk. I must say I think they Morey's made a very smart move and have created a printing press for $$$$. Im sure many of you are in agreement because the boards have been extremely quiet about this. I guess they shut everyone up on the matter. Cudos to the Morey's, I am just sorry we didn't think of it first.

To be fair, comparing what MJC is to what LIR was (1980's WLIR) is like comparing the Royals and the Yankees (although the Yankees don't turn out the well too often either :D)

98.5 makes alot more sense on the new translator than WLIR. It's over.
 
SIRIUS 22 is about as close as we are going to get to the classic WLIR format. Unfortunately the station is dying on LI with such a limited signal and unreliable internet stream.

LIR is no longer with us and hasn't been for a very long time.

WLIR is the government assigned call-sign for a radio station operating on a frequency of 107.1 on the east end of Long Island. It can be heard by fewer that 3/4 of a million people and likely listened to by less than one thousand, plays some 80's alternative, mostly the stuff that could be heard on CBS-FM, Jack-FM or the like. It has virtually no on air talent, no following, no personality, no creativity. It is insignificant. They are in-fact, on the air, but I wouldn't say STILL.

LIR was an acronym for "Low Income Radio" as DiBella once put it.
LIR was the ultimate power in the universe.
LIR was once in a penthouse in Beautiful Downtown Hempstead.
LIR was the home of the LIR Newsblimp.
LIR was the flagship station of the Party Out Of Bounds.
LIR was the place for Off The Boat.
LIR was irreverent.
LIR was what no other station ever was or ever has been.
LIR was the station that made radio interesting.
LIR was "The Radio Station"

And now....with exception to a few specialty shows on the weekend,
LIR appears to be dying a slow death.
The cumulative playlist from the last 25 years of over 2000+ songs
is barely scratched as they play the same narrow list
of stuff (old and new) over and over.
The station could have been a "WNEW" for alternative music, old and new.
But it's not.
No surprises.
No experiments.
No remixes.
No laughs.
No fun.
And now, for Western Suffolk and other points West,
No stream and
No reception

I wonder if WLIR/WDRE's record collection is still intact. That would certainly be a new-wave/80s alternative music fan's wet dream.

Ehm....sorry. Yah, I do have somewhat of a colorfoul language. :-[

But I promise I don't do that kinda stuff on-air. Unless it was a carrier-current station. ;D
