Here is something Interesting...

GRAND LARCENY

The owner of Livingstone Broadcasting in Riverside, which broadcasts WLIR 107.1, told Southampton Town Police on Tuesday, June 21 that sometime between that date and Sunday, June 19 someone stole two transmitters worth a total of $10,000 from the station, located on County Road 51. A lock and chain on a fence leading into the property were arranged differently from when the owner left a few days before. The lock to the storage shed was also damaged, the owner told police. Police are investigating.

Just listen for a brand new powerful pirate station on 107.1, that'll most likely be operated by the thief.

Where they already off the air or were these backups? You would figure there's no way to steal an operating transmitter without being noticed.

It's said they they were taken off the air over night on Fathers Day and didn't find out until the next morning. Apparently the signal is still originating from TMO in Syosset.

Since the station is still rebroadcasting WEPN AM rather than offering religious programming, perhaps the sale to Livingstone has not closed yet?

FCC has the official closing as May 25, 2011. WEPN is still simulcasting with calls for WLIR being given. If there is to be any change it seems it hasn't happened yet. Word is that transmitters were stolen by someone who was familiar with the lock and knew the combo.

I know I keep hearing about copper thefts at assorted sites but that's going way beyond. I'm surprised their facility didn't have an adequate alarm and/or intrusion detection.

The theft of both the on air transmitter and the backup were not by some random pirate. Those transmitters were in the facility for years and were never disturbed or disrupted. Word is that they were removed very carefully by someone who had knowledge of the site. The new owners didn't even own it a month before they were stolen. Sounds a little fishy....

@Radiohead Fred re: "WEPN is still simulcasting with calls for WLIR being given": Interesting in that the WEPN TOH ID no longer includes WLIR in it. I wonder what WLIR's TOH ID consists of.

I'll have to check but the last time I heard the WEPN TOH it was on Friday and I heard "WLIR Hampton Bays"....It was gone for awhile but has been back for at least a month.

I don't about that. The last I heard it was TOH with the calls. I guess the new owners still haven't made a switch in formats yet.

I'm not sure about the legalities...but is there some kind of federal offense if a Radio station is taken off the air by the actions of an individual or individuals who commit a theft like this while the station was actively on the air?
