An article in a local Hamptons paper indicates that there are still many financial issues that Peconic Broadcasting, the new owner of public station WLIU is trying to deal with. Among them is the need to find a new home for the station, which has remained at the Southampton campus of Stony Brook University. The college, which says it needs the space, is expecting them to move out by the end of the month, after having granted them several extensions. Peconic has not been successful in finding affordable quarters for the NPR affiliate.
The article also explains that donations from wealthy residents of eastern Long Island have been below expectations. In addition, it says that the 2.4 million dollars Peconic offered the university for the WLIU license is "grossly inflated," according to "industry insiders."
Perhaps if the situation does not improve, the relatively well-funded WNYC may eventually swoop in and offer to buy the station, in a bid to use it to extend WQXR's reach in eastern Long Island?
