WLLL Lynchburg AM 930

I had the pleasure of assisting engineer Tony Di Nicola on the installation of new audio processing for WLLL a week ago. We worked between midnight and 4 am Sat into Sun. They wanted to be the loudest thing on the dial.... I think we did it. We are using the Arianne processor with an Optimod 8200 into a beautiful Nautel XL-12 transmitter. It was hot and sweaty at the transmitter, but worth it.

Too bad Fletcher H. won't leave the processing alone...

(Worked at WLLL when it was top-40...)

I remember WLLL from back in the late 60s. It wasn't the best top 40 I ever heard, but soared in comparison with the other Lynchburg stations---and it was only 1k back then. Young people within about 30-40 miles loved it. Lynchburg had about 5 AMs and 2FMs and all except triple L were stuck back in the late 40s-early 50s. Seems like things have not changed too much---the two biggest AMs (590&1390) disappeared! The two FMs, 100.1 and 101.7, simucast Roanoke stations---most everyone else listens to other Roanoke stations, except for 107.9, Amherst which has a huge audience. I'm sure today's WLLL serves its gospel listeners well also.

The station sounds great here off 221. Just moved here on the 5th, and WLLL is indeed the loudest and strongest! Curious what did happen to 590. It's still listed as active by Truth Broadcasting.

Are they off the air again? I haven't picked them up in Farmville since like '03 when their tower lease or whatever expired.

It would be real nice to see somebody do something awesome with WLVA, with it (supposedly) being the most powerful station in town.

For what it's worth, though, Lynchburg radio aint that bad. Lots of decent radio stations to choose from...not including the out-of-towners from Greensboro, Harrisonburg, and Raleigh that seem to be receivable 24/7. Perhaps with the 100.9 and 103.9 move-ins and the open allotment on 93.7, I'd suppose Lynchburg would be over-radioed given the fact that so many folks tune into Roanoke stations

I think 590 is using a long wire antenna at minimal power to keep the license good.
And, WLLL went to 5kw in 1968 from their site off 221 (then 460) west. Two trailers and a cement bloick TX building.

At one time, each of the Lynchburg AM's was a Top-40 station for much if not all of their broadcast day. I worked at 'LLL and WWOD when they were Top-40, and at 'LVA when it was an eclectic Adult Contemporary. They had the neatest transmitter building! WWOD had the neatest building, having been built for WWOD-TV, channel 16. That never materialized. The building stands on Mimosa drive all boarded up with the towers long gone. I'd love to have a look inside...

I worked at WWOD in 1973 and just found some old airchecks of WWOD and WBRG (they were both country at the time). I posted the 1973 airchecks and some old WWOD studio photos to my web site at:

What ever happened to WWOD? I assume somone is using the AM and FM frequencies. Back in 1998, I made contact with a former employee whowas the bookkeeper at the time. In '98 she was the GM for another Lynchburg country station, but I forgot her name and station. Not sure she is still arround.

Truth Broadcasting also owns 201 Watter 580 WLES Bon Air(Richmond), VA..... which is a simulcast of 10,000 Watter 960 WZRH Dallas, NC and 50,000 Watter 830 WTRU Kernersville/Wintson/Salem/Greensboro.
