WLLY Wilson General Manager Passes

Rev. Wallace Bullock, former owner, and current general manager of WLLY 1350 Wilson passed away this past Saturday after a major heart attack. The station appears to be running on 'auto-pilot' now with the same southern gospel format.

Bullock and a business partner sold WLLY to Estuardo Rodriguez back in the summer of 2002. Surprisingly, the station's programming remained unchanged. Rodriguez has immediately changed other stations to Hispanic programming soon after buying them. His other stations are
WLNR(ex:WISP) 1230 Kinston,
WLLN 1370 Lillington,
WGSB 1060 Mebane/Chapel Hill,
WLLQ(ex:WRTP) 1530 Chapel Hill/Durham, and
WRTG 1000 Garner/Raleigh.
WLLY may shift to Hispanic programming now as well.

He will be surely missed. I had an opportunity to meet him briefly on a couple of occasions while working for cross-town rival WVOT. A nicer guy you'll never meet. My prayers go to the family and his many, many friends.

As for WLLY, (we used to call it "Willie"), how many more Hispanic stations does the area need? With it's religious format, it has long been eclipsed by stations from out of town. Even the pathetic WGTM has better numbers. 'VOT went Gospel a couple of years ago, and now the new LPFM at 106.9 will probably be religious. WLLY needs a fresh approach, lest it fade away entirely.
