WLNC?

I see from the newsletter that WLNC has been sold, and I guess I have been out of touch with that area way too long.

What happened to the Phillips family that founded the station? I assume that George Sr. has passed on, and George Jr, didn't have much interest in the radio station, but what about Mike? He had a lot of interest and was good at it (even though he knew it and would not let you forget it). I always thought that he woulde wind up running the station after he finished college.

Lots of memories from there for me in just 6 short months, both good and not so good.

Anyone?

I heard some WLNC driving down that way Friday. They had a comment line promo and A LOT of information about Scotland County High sports. They sounded like they were doing the same good job they seem to have been doing since I've known of them, but that's only been since the early 90s, right around the time Fred Fox bought the station.

I saw in The Fayetteville Observer where the general manager bought out Fox a few months back.

Their website doesn't have as much on it as it used to. Nothing about the Phillipses.

I was, I said you were good at it, but you have to admit, while you were in High School you had a bit of an ego and a bit of "this is my daddys station" attitude. Still you were very good at what you did then and probably still are.

What are you doing now, and if you care to say, why didn't you keep WLNC in the family? As I said in the earlier post, I always expected you to be the one to take the reins and run with the station, and I expected good things there too.

Thanks for the kind words. Being in the radio business was something I totally loved. When it stopped being fun, I decided to do something else. My mother died from lung cancer in 1978. She was an integral part of the business. It was never the same after that. We sold the station in 1984. The music of the day was so bad that I couldn't stand listening to the station.

Check out http://wlncradio.com. The station is still in the same location except that they do their morning show from downtown. We sold the station to John Pittman and Jim Clark. They sold it to Fred Fox. He sold it to Gary Gallman. Gary seems to be doing a great job with it. The station celebrated its 50th birthday on January 2, 2012.

Unfortunately I don't know much about the names you listed. Tom Shields passed away. Gene Cooper was in Laurinburg last I heard. Skip White is somewhere near Clayton. Several people have contacted me through Facebook, but I don't know if any of them were there when you were.
