WLND Changes format

As it was rumored they would, after concluding Christmas Music for this year, 98.1 WLND flipped formats. Sounds like a variety format, with the tagline "Your Life, Your Music. 98.1 LND"
I'll have an mp3 of the flip later.

This is insane. While I don't live anywhere near there, classic country was successful and they should have stuck with it. If classic country can work anywhere, it's Tennessee.

It was working too well. It was pulling to much of the audience away from WUSY.
Aha. And I'll bet that's one of those sort-of-country stations.

As successful as it was, it didn't even have a Wikipedia article until I created one. And I just checked that article. Oh, yeah, Clear Channel is behind this. They don't want us to listen to any music worth hearing.

I do have a cousin who lives in one of the towns which a Chattanooga radio station has as a city of license.

O my goodness, it's the great "those sort of country" music conspiracy. I bet GW Bush is responsible. It's shameful that no Wikipedia article was created. I was wondering when it would happen.

It all began when Hank, Patsy and Jim, Elvis and Eddie Arnold all died. It was nowhere near Dallas, so Oswald couldn't be blamed. Johnny Cash was already dressed "in black" so they didn't even have to change his clothes to bury him.

These foks are all in "Hillbilly Heaven" probably listening to Sheryl Crow and Keith Urban and (o my goodness!) Taylor Swift.

My information says Clear Channel wants ever country listener to develop a "tin ear" so they can introduce the newest craze; COUNTRY RAP.

Ha! My friend, One mans MUSIC is another mans noise.

I miss Ferlin Husky, too.
Peace!

I've worked for CC for years: how did you find out about our secret plan?
Did you plant a bug in one of our "let's destroy country music nationwide" meetings?
damn.

See, Chimp, I told you so. Careful of that romer dude. We've got HIS number - it's 979!! I heard Taylor Swift is 978.

WOW. That's one of the most embarrassing ratings drops I can recall ever seeing. And US101 didn't even gain that much (at least according to the 6+ numbers). I'm actually surprised that an adult-driven station is bombing so badly in Chattanooga, considering how rhythmic-leaning The Mountain and Kiss are, but the music's also really unfocused. Coolio and Rob Thomas? Fergie into Santana into Technotronic? They might as well rename the station after the Chattanooga Choo Choo because that is trainwreck city.

Just go straight Hot AC.

No, but 3 Daughters Media's WUUQ grabbed some of those classic country shares that The Legend dumped. WUUQ dropped classic hits and went classic country as "Q Country 97.3 & 99.3" (www.wuuqradio.com), and even picked up the former Legend voiceover/sweeper guy shortly after WLND flipped. Seems like a smart move on their part considering The Legend was once on that same station (97.3 and 99.3) at one time.

As far as Clear Channel dropping classic country goes, I'm not sure if it was boneheaded or not. It always pulled stellar ratings (even through moving to 3 different frequencies), but from what I hear, they couldn't sell the demos at all, no matter how high it was rated. Two big strikes against the format (1. It skews very old, 50 plus. 2. It's perceived as a very blue collar format whose listeners don't have that much disposable income and therefore aren't very attractive to advertisers). It's probably a good fit for 97.3/99.3 though, since they don't have the signal to compete head on with any of the major players.

I kinda hope they keep the Hot AC format on WLND though. Having two CHR's and a Hot AC in Chattanooga after years without much mainstream hit music is pretty cool.
