WLNE ABC 6 News at 7

I've noticed that it has been preempted recently by some good cause informercials, like St. Judes, or something about breast cancer. What's the deal? I also noticed that they said "ABC 6 News continues tonight at 10 on NewsChannel5 and at 11 on ABC6". Is this a new newscast, or just because WNAC got preempted by sports?

Maybe the ABC6 News at 7 experiment didn't work out for them. I'm not surprised. Most people watch the News at 6. Why watch it again at 7? It was just on! Plus they have some pretty stiff competition working against them at 7. Wheel of Fortune. I think Seinfeld too. I watched the 7 PM Newscast maybe ONCE. They can't get ratings like that.

I don't really watch it either, I just look at the guide and notice that where there was news scheduled one day, there is something else scheduled the next.

Honestly, they were probably just filling time, since they couldn't afford syndicated programming. It now looks like they're able to fill the time with paid informercials. So, why not make some money?

The station still carries the news at 7:00, but they may preempt it because of special events like this. I personally like their newscasts and for some it's at a convenient time if they get home too late for the 6:00 news.

I guess Providence now knows what time and channel they can catch the next "Billy Graham Crusade" special...

That's fine. I personally think that 7pm is a great time for news. However, if you never know when it's going to be pre-empted, then viewers are not going watch faithfully.

Of course, this is the second time that WLNE has tried news at 7pm. The first time was with the Action News re-format in 1980. At that time, WJAR started a competing 7pm newscast. However, both were short-lived and were cancelled by 1981.

I remember in the 80's when WJar flpooed with a 7:00 newscast.

The 7pm newscast will last as long as they can not afford to buy a syndicated program that will get ratings against Wheel. They are already paying the staff to be there through the 11pm news so why not make them work. It's just a rehash of the second half of First at Four with any late breaking news and updates.

As for the 10pm on RINC they do this every time FOX Providence pre-epmts the 10pm news for sports. It's a good move again the staff is there and it gives them a chance for the exposure that they need.

Personally I think Global should have put more into RINC (as well as COX) and made it a real news station with updates throughout the day and special programming and a commentary show done by Cianci.

At this point just sell out to Hearst and simulcast WCVB.
