WLNE ABC6 GLOBAL CHANGES

I thought I would start a thread to showcase how Global Broadcasting is changing WLNE in Providence

To date the changes have been minimal, but c'mon they've only been in charge of that sinking ship for a couple of weeks.

News Director - OUT
Vice President / General Manager - OUT
Walter Cryan - OUT
April O'Dell - OUT

ABC6 News to return to 5am starting 10/29/07 as reported on today's newscast.

Please feel free to post any changes you see either good or bad.

That's a good start, but what they should really do is have a newscast from 5-6 PM or 4-5 PM weeknights rather than a short 30 minute newscast.

Re: And they need 'em!

They need to revamp that entire operation, which will not be easy to do. Nor can it be done quickly. The station has been such a loser for so many years that it needs to start from scratch. If they're smart, they'll change everything. That includes things like the station's logo, positioners, news staff (particularly behind the scenes), news set, graphics (news and general programming), and the frequency of news broadcasts. They need to revamp that website of theirs too. It screams "small market" and spams the reader with countless pop-ups like some website that is selling snake oil. Really bush league. ::)

Local news, in particular, will require more of a financial investment on the part of the ownership. The quality must be top notch. I must say that these first steps do sound positive. WLNE - under Global - needs to look like a completely new and fresh station to the viewer. The station has been so bad for so long that most of the "heritage" associated with it is negative. A perennial third in a 3 horse race. That poses a fairly unique problem, but one that can be overcome.

This will take a big investment on the part of Global Broadcasting, but they had to know that fixing this station would not come cheap. To make ch. 6 a player in the market, you literally have to make changes from top to bottom and make it into a new and better station that competes favorably with 10 and 12. One that looks like it belongs in a larger mid-sized market. Channel 12 should be their first target, IMO.

I agree and also believe a call-letter change is in order! WLNE has a bad reputation like WTEV had. If you're going to start fresh, change your name as well.

What's the big move. They are running an add telling people to tune in tomorrow at 6 pm for a announcemment that will change the landscape of Providence television. This must be big. About time this market gets a shakeup. WJAR has been sitting back for far too long.

The one change so far that I'm sorry to see was the retirement of Walter Cryan. He could have helped maintain a measure of stability and credibility (as he did for the time he was with Channel 6).

If all it was going to take to fix the problems at WLNE was money and resources, then it would have happened long ago. After all, Pulitzer was well heeled, and Freedom was no pauper either. The problem has to run deeper than just changing call letters (been there...done that), or new fresh faces at the anchor desk (been there and done that multiple times), all with no lasting success.

Over the years, they've even tried raiding the talent pool at the other stations (John Ghiorse, John Sweeney, Dave Layman, etc.)......again.....nothing.

WTEV got off to such a poor start in the early days that they never got that "second chance" to make a first impression.

Just my cynical side showing......but......maybe Global is just content to own a TV station, and won't do much more than low-cost cosmetic changes, and perhaps trim the news budget, and just be happy to own a cash cow.

I hope I'm wrong, but I fear otherwise.

I think this planned announcement is just all hype. I can't imagine that they would be doing anything all that groundbreaking. Unless they are going to bring in Bikini weather girls and new anchors direct from the Playboy mansion, I highly doubt that this is going to be a change that anyone cares about. It's going to be more like a 4:00 PM Newscast or something equally lame.

How about a 7pm newscast? They tried that back in 1980 and it failed, but most people now get home later and still would like to have a newscast.

As for the announcement, perhaps Dave Layman and Ann Conway are coming back to anchor the news. :D

Earlier I said that a 4:00 PM Newscast would be lame. I'm going to take that back. I do enjoy watching WHDH news at 4 PM. So maybe something local would be kind of cool at 4. But I would still rather have bikini clad weather girls. lol

OK I just checked the ABC6 website. You've got to be kidding me. I am assuming that this is the big announcement. Just read it and then shake your head like I am, because this in no way, shape or form is going to change the landscape of Providence news.

ABC6 names "Buddy" Cianci Chief Political Analyst & Contributing Editor
Vice President and general manager Stephen Doerr announced the addition of "Buddy" Cianci to the ABC6 news team as the chief political analyst and contributing editor as of Thursday, November 1, 2007.

The man with the world's most obvious hairpiece now works for them? Ugh! (Sorry, I don't live in RI. That's how I used to remember him.)

I actually tuned in for the "big announcement" which came at 6:15 though they repeatedly claimed it would come right at 6pm. VERY VERY VERY cheesy introduction of Cianci... then a handheld camera followed him in to the studio where he took a seat... Jim Hummel addressed him as "Mayor" and indicated he would be doing an opinion segment weekly, and the female anchor asked him the following hard-hitting question: "Will you be sugar coating the news?" Will you be sugar coating the news????!!!! Did a 3-year old win a contest to get the first question?

COME ON! I was hoping they were going to say they'd be taking a sledgehammer to the whole thing and starting over. It was REALLY cheesy and disappointing.

I knew that the whole thing smelled like hype from the very beginning. All I can think about is how much happier I would have been with the 4 PM Newscast.

Yet another case of "been there - done that". Cianci has done political analysis for Channel 6 at times in the past.

Well......so far, Global Broadcasting has done nothing to change my low opinion of them.

Hummel, Come here and I will remove the knife from your back.

Global Broadcasting may do for ABC6 the same thing that Battaglia did for WALE Radio. You people in Providence know exactly what I mean.
