WLNE Experimenting with 5PM Slot

Tonight and Monday, ABC6 will be airing a 5PM newscast, complete with a different set of anchors, Erica Ricci and Andrew Gobeil (who switched newscasts with weekend anchor Mark Curtis). Two questions. Is this a sign of things to come, and why would they be adding another newscast, especially with the financial state they're in? I feel it's just another hour (or half-hour, they didn't say) of repeating the same stories from 4PM. Very unnecessary.

Political advertising. Pols are more likely to advertise during newscasts.

More than likely the election.

OR

They lost another show.Cheaper for them to run news if people are already in the building. That's probably why they run a 7:00 clock newscast.Running a 5:00 newscast could be the same reason.

Maybe you will soon see a simulcast soon of RI NEWS CHANNEL when ABC is'nt airing any network shows.

Just trying to maximize the political ad revenue! In another market, a station temporarily expanded its 30 minute noon newscast to an hour. It will all be over in 24 hours or so!!!

The election cycle - the "Christmas music format" of TV news. :D
