WLNE in receivership (Bankrupt)

Five Montana full-service stations went dark during June 2009, two of which were VHF stations: KBAO 13 Lewistown, KBBJ 9 Havre, KBTZ 24 Butte, KLMN 26 Great Falls and KMMF 17 Missoula. I believe all were major network affiliates but may have been satellite stations, as I believe KVIJ 8 Sayre OK was.

Also, two Nevada full-service stations have bitten the dust this year: KWNV 7 Winnemucca on 4/22, and KEGS 7.x (50) Tonopah on 7/6, although KWNV was a satellite and KEGS was never a network affiliate.

Analog station KTFL 4 Flagstaff AZ also shut down before ever going digital, but again, not a major network affiliate.

I'd be quite surprised if WLNE goes dark. A major network affiliation has to be quite a lure for prospective buyers.

Also, KSNB-4 FOX in Superior, NE has been dark since December 2009, presumably permanently. I found this out after trying to DX them earlier this summer, and not getting even a trace of signal from them. Of course, this is far from a major market station. It was is the Grand Island market, but located really in the middle of nowhere.

I'd like to see Hearst buy the station and put money into it, producing the first HD newscast. I would change the old logo, possibly the call letters (is WVIP - 6 Providence or WCVI - channel 6) available? And how about adding a new show - Chronicle at 7:30, tailored to Rhode Island, like WMUR has Chronicle for New Hampshire?

Yeah that would be nice. Hearst seems to really invest in their news product. I think it would be a great thing for WLNE. I'm also all for changing their logo. I like the look of ABC 6 in Philadelphia. It reminds me a lot of WLNE's logo when they were still WTEV in the 70's.

It's been 15 years since WCIX was last in use...?

Realistically, though, it is unlikely that anyone is going to pour additional money down the drain. WLNE has been re-invented so many times in the past 30 years that I've lost count! I'm not sure that there is room for three newsrooms in Southeastern New England.

All these red herrings, talking about Hearst.
Why not Ed Ansin? I bet THAT'S a station they'd like to have in their portfolio!

If Asnin wants to purchase it I think that would be great too. But he'll probably also want to purchase a whole new building while he is at it. There is no way that tiny little news studio is big enough for Ed Asnin standards. He always could put up a Chroma key wall and make it look big though. I love these ideas I'm hearing. Unfortunately WLNE typically isn't the luckiest station around. If history repeats itself (which it probably will), Another unheard of company without much cash will buy the station and operate it on a shoe string budget. Would anybody really be surprised?

About the best we can hope for from this sorry situation is that Hearst does indeed step in and makes WLNE a part of it's WCVB based regional operaion.

Even if this happened, why would Hearst put much (or any) money into it? It would be all about consolidation, with perahps one or two reporters kept on down here. All the rest....right down to master control....could be based right out of Boston.

Still....It's about the best scenario I can imagine. Outside of Hearst, I don't see many good things out there for Channel 6.

Because we're talking about dreams, not nightmares. Seven's "sound and fury, signifying nothing" and virtual sets are annoying to many of us, and imply virtual content. And furthermore --- oh, wait: WHOOSH! ZING! BREAKING NEWS!!!!

Phooey!

Now is the time for WLNE to get wild. Replace all the current on air staff with Bikini Bimbos who can read a teleprompter. They would gain instant press nationwide for the wildest and sexiest newscast available anywhere! They've got nothing to lose now. Mine as well take a gamble. Maybe a miracle can happen that will keep that place alive.

Talk about the impossible dream!! Just where are you going to find a bikini bimbo who can read? :D

That's not really my problem. WLNE got themselves into this mess. Now they are going to have to find the bimbos who can read to get them out of this mess. I'm guessing that there are some hot girls from Rhode Island college who fit the bill. All the hot bimbos seem to go there. ;D

I heard Jim Hummel say they wanted an actress rather an anchor last week while he was on WPRO?Who was he referring too? Alysan Alexander

What if you built a solid news department but nobody watched? That's wLNE's problem. They've proved it over and over again. They've reinvented themselves every 2-3 years over the past three decades and still nobody watched.

I still remember, in the early 80's, WLNE had the best weather computer in town. Steve Cascione correctly predicted 2 major snowstorms (12-16 inches of snow), while the beloved Art Lake and Hank Bouchard were telling us there was a chance of flurries. Did that help the ratings? Of course not.

They've tried Action News, Channel 6 News, WLNE News, WLNE 6 News, 6 News, ABC 6 News (did I miss any?), but nothing helps

Time to simulcast a Boston newscast with a couple of RI reporters.

If the world was about to end and WJAR and WPRI got knocked off air, would people THEN watch WLNE?

I get the impression Allison Alexander, might be leaving WLNE. Every night. She has been enhancing her appearance(hair, wardrobe) more than she usually does..Probably updating her tape for potential new employers..

She's the smart one. She is preparing for the inevitable.

"Tape"? You're kidding, right?

I know what you're referring to -- a demo reel -- but can't it be on a DVD or, even better, online?
