WLNE Sale

So I guess WLNE will remain an ABC station for the foreseeable future.

Just watching news at 4 on six, the new owner said he wants wlne news IN HD, they said they want to be the first! However we wont see any changes until June 1 2011. Said one of the reporters. Can they beat wpri? they already have HD promos that look awsome. And with wjar they could be re doing the set for an hd upgrade? We will see.

$4M sounds dirt cheap (and it'll be even cheaper if the old Tiverton XMTR site is sold off) but the cost of the ABC affiliation renewal will be a major factor in how profitable the station will be going forward.

I think 10 is, atleast an upgrade to wide screen...

I don't quite understand. If Citadel(the other one) did not win the bid for WLNE, ABC was going to pull thier affiliation. What if Joe Paolino won the bid. What would be stuck on WLNE? All infomercials.I dont get it.

ABC's threat to pull the affiliation was an empty one. They simply used the leverage of a pending affiliation agreement renewal deadline to sabotage the auction and guarantee Citadel's victory. The entire process was a farce.

Soon WLNE will likely have a single anchor format mornings and noon. I suspect that the early evening news will be reduced by 1 hour (some combination of reduction/cancellation of the 4pm, 6pm and 7pm news). In addition, weekend mornings are at risk.

If you want to see ABC World News Now, better get an antenna; Citadel is so cheap their stations sign off at night. And all of their stations are dead last in local news ratings, so at least in that respect they're well-qualified to run WLNE.

Maybe they'll go back to the old days of the Saturday movie matinee, back when WLNE used to be a CBS affiliate and they pre-empted CBS' Saturday morning children's lineup.

I hope they dont get rid of the news at 4pm. That was one of the better things they have done. And I think the 4pm newscast is the highest rated news cast they have. BTW last night I was looking at WOI tv, the news videos dont look that bad. The on screen graphics look nice.

Now that WLNE is going to keep it's ABC affiliation, people in Rhode Island will get to see "Body Of ProoF ".

How bad would that be?They are promoting the crap out of a show. The show being taped locally would 'nt be on the air.

John DePetro is supposedly in this show - if it was not available in Rhode Island he would drive to ABC and force them to give him the show on DVD and barge in and threaten Channel 10 or 12 to air it instead. "Do you know who I am"

IF an affiliate refuses to a air a particular show.I believe they can farm the show out to another station.
Let's say WLNE (just using this as an example) did not want to air the show. I believe they could strike adeal with WLWC or something with ABC's permision.I am not sure if the affiliate is totaly not available in the market though.
I think they would hae to run the whole network on off hours.
(A.K.A) WJAR as a WB affiliate in it's early days running it after hours.Unhappily Ever after my favorite WB show.

As a side note... this was used only as an example THERE ARE NO PLANS to send the show somewhere else. This is only example.

In the day and age of DVRs, I don't think airing in off hours is as bad as it used to be. Look at Fringe, it got somewhere around a 1.9 for people actually watching it as it aired, but the estimated DVR ratings were huge, which is contributing heavily to Fox keeping around.

Networks are starting to realize that timing isn't as important as it used to be. There are enough people who will record and watch it later that non live programming that the original airing viewership is not very important at all. I think that's GOOD for TV. I hope we see a lot less shows canceled before their time.
