WLNE to be sold to Providence Journal?

If this is true it will be one of the better scenarios that could have happened. The Projo knows the town well which is probably better than having an out of state owner buy the place. I also like the fact that they will be moving the station into the Projo building. Having all those News reporters under one roof would give ABC6 one of the most powerful newsrooms in the state. I think they have a decent sized building too. So it might mean a real nice looking studio. At least I hope so.

I like what I'm hearing so far. Lots of cross promotion would probably take place too. Many ads in the newspaper explaining how once and for all ABC6 is in Providence and not in Massachusetts too. This may finally be what turns the station around and gets people to watch.

This might be one of the very few scenarios that makes competing stations a little nervous. If ABC6 has the Providence Journal behind them every step of the way, I actually think it will be a game changer in this market.

Rhode Islanders haven't figured out that ABC6 is in "Downtown Providence" yet?!? That studio is over 30 years old!

I thought the Belo people sold out of the Communications biz? Maybe this price was so low they had to see what they could do with LNE?
But if it makes so much sense, why haven't others done it? The projo has problems of their own that they may not be able to overcome in their present form.

Last I heard they were trying to sell their #1Building which in the past also housed two radio studios am/fm.

As the article at fybush.com (or, if you want to go that way, fybush.org) explores, Belo split in early 2008, with the Belo TV stations (largely in the south, southwest and west) remaining as "Belo Corp." and the newspapers, including the ProJo, becoming "A.H. Belo Corporation."

It's not at all clear to me, from what I'm hearing, which "Belo" is supposedly buying WLNE. Neither scenario makes complete sense - if it's the TV "Belo Corp," there's no particular reason they'd want to move WLNE in with a newspaper they no longer own, and if it's the newspaper "A.H. Belo Corporation," they no longer have the TV group that would provide the management expertise that could bring channel 6 back from the brink.

Even when Channel 6 had its' studios in New Bedford, they always had their sights on Providence. I recall the days when "Newscope 6" had a big photo of the Providence skyline behind the anchors (who were always standing up). Channel 6 tried so hard to be a "Providence" station. But with WJAR and WPRI already established with their mighty Rehoboth signals and Channel 6 with their not-so-mighty signal from Tiverton, RI, there was really no contest. Now with all major stations transmitting DTV from Rehoboth, Channel 6 (DTV 49) now has that level playing field to try to beat 10 and 12. Let's hope Belo is up to the task. It can only get better.

WLNE is still licensed to New Bedford, no?
Yes, it is and will still be licensed to New Bedford as such. But the "New Bedford" ID is only seen once an hour with a dual city ID (New Bedford, Providence) and has been that way since the late 60's when both the New Bedford and Providence ADI's were formed as one. But notice on WJAR the ID is for "Providence/New Bedford". I'm not sure WPRI follows the same way. Nonetheless, WLNE (and before that, WTEV) has always WANTED to be a "Providence" station. Now, for all intents and purposes, it is thanks in part to the DTV changes of last year. I think you'll find very little New Bedford area news on WLNE today.

Of course, WLNE has always wanted a shot at much larger "Providence" audience!
