WLNE's news presentation is great and it appears that Citadel has put in a lot of money and resources into the station (and that was probably helped by the sale of most of Citadel's stations a few years ago). The staff even has Facebook Live sessions to chat with its followers on Facebook several times a week. In my opinion, they are better than WJAR, which overwhelmingly leads in the news ratings constantly. But have they budged in the ratings, and if not, why don't more people try the news on WLNE?

Because its run by a cheap owner with very cheap graphics that looks like anyone can make them on Powerpoint. Its a reason why they're third by a longshot.
Its WJAR followed by WPRI and before Sinclair took over WJAR, WJAR was pretty much the gold standard in R.I. news, even though WPRI was right there too. Unfortunately, WLNE has been third throughout its history and its not changing anytime soon.
Frankly, in all honesty, if WLNE was to be sold to Hearst (already owns WCVB Boston, WMTW Poland Spring, WPTZ Plattsburgh, you get the story), that would be such a HUUUUUUGE upgrade to them. One that WLNE, right now, badly needs if they're gonna make any dent to WJAR or to a lesser extent, WPRI.
Hearst also owns WMUR-TV (ABC) channel 9 of Manchester, NH. It would make for a nice string of ABC affiliates: Poland Spring, ME (Portland), Manchester, NH (Boston), Boston and then New Bedford, MA (Providence). The "string" would be broken into Connecticut heading down the coast, as Nexstar owns WTNH-TV channel 8 of New Haven (Hartford/New Haven DMA).
Many years ago, the ABC "string" for the area was Channel 6 (then IIRC, WSNE-TV), Channel 7 (then WNAC-TV), Channel 8 (WMTW-TV) and Channel 9 (WMUR-TV)....
Where we lived in central NH, we were actually able to get ALL 4 channels (with a high-gain Jerrold antenna on an Alliance U-100 rotor and Winegard 30db amp.....!!!)......
Many years ago would have to be sometime between January 1, 1963 (when then WTEV Channel 6 went on the air) and March 18, 1972 (the day before WNAC Channel 7 Switched to CBS and the new Channel 5, WCVB, went on the air and took over the ABC affiliation).
Old Boston edition TV Guides listed (6)(7)(8)(9) for most ABC programs, and a few as (6)(8)(9)(38) for the many daytime ABC shows bypassed by WNAC and picked up by WSBK.
What were the local daytime shows on WNAC that they bypassed the network for? Was it during when I was watching Major Mudd and The Three Stooges in the afternoons?
In the TV Guide for Monday, July 20, 1970, WNAC was showing from 2 to 4 PM the 1949 movie "And Baby Makes Three", while WSBK was carrying from ABC - "The Newlywed Game", "The Dating Game", "General Hospital", and "One Life To Live".
At 4 PM, WNAC went back to the network for "Dark Shadows", while WSBK jumped to CBS for "Gomer Pyle", bypassed by WHDH (ch 5) for "Peyton Place".
And earlier in the afternoon WSBK had carried "Jeopardy", "Who, What, or Where", and "Life with Linkletter" from NBC, while WBZ showed news, and "Mike Douglas".
