WLNG 92.1 - Eastern Long Island

I discovered this station on the web tonight and was amazed what a great oldies station is. I heard lots of 50's tunes! They also stream online. I'm sure this may have been brought up before here on the board.
Their web address is: http://www.wlng.com

It sounds like being back in that time, especially with the old jingles and the dj's as well.

Paul Sidney really knows how to super serve his audience. An excellent station owner/operator for sure. I've had the pleasure of speaking to him on occassion. WLNG is a real gem of a station. This station is the real thing! I was very happy to see them streaming once again. I always enjoy listening to them on the web. But, the REAL experience with 'LNG is when you drive along on coast of Southern Rhode Island and Connecticut. To get the real feel of 'LNG, you must listen to it off-air on 92.1. It's hard to explain, unless you've been there. This is one station I hope never changes!

It's a very cool station and one-of-a-kind. Would probably be impossible to duplicate anywhere else. Not only is it known as a form of entertainment, it is also the "news/talk/info" station whenever something happens on the east end of the island (like a storm or a power failure or election... etc).

What helps WLNG is that a large part of the staff has been there for well over 25 years.

Last year when I visited CT, I listened to 92.1 WLNG and I thought it was an excellent station. Seems like they have really built up a heritage. 42 years, wow!

I visited Newport, Rhode Island in the summer of '79 when I happened upon WLNG. Actually, I caught the AM first. Then, I heard them talking about ..'crystal clear FM 92". Its been one of my all time favorite stations ever since. Long live "Rusty Potts on the program"!

Peter, sometimes if the weather gets crazy, WLNG will pop up on my radios either at home or in my car. Just had something like it happen last week--IT WAS FANTASTIC! I only wish they have openings as that's one station I'd love to work for!

WLNG is the real deal!

I heard 92.1 WLNG off air in my car last week during a tropo opening while I was driving around town in New Jersey. It is so much different when you hear the station on the radio rather than on the computer.
______________

Hey coolcat713.

Listen to WLNG on Saturday Night for the Saturday Night Sock Hop with Mark Edwards. "We play all pre-Beatles and pre-Beach Boys and we take your request." He has around 18000 pre-1964 records and most of his records are listed on his website and you can request by email. My request for Saturday is Bullwhip Rock by The Cyclones.

Here is the website for Saturday Night Sock Hop:

Re: WLNG 92.1 - Reverb

Now that you mention it, I just thought about reverb. There was a lot of reverb on the radio but it is not on the stream. I first listened to WLNG when it was 1600 AM in 1973. My grandparents lived six miles from their transmitter so I got to hear them often. Their reverb was equal to WCBS-FM and your post made me realize that it is not in the stream. I don't know if it is possible to put it in a stream.

The first jock I heard in 1973 was Rusty Potts. He is still on two hours in the afternoon every day.

Take notice of the spots on WLNG. They are mostly local, so the problem with older demos will not hurt them as much with advertisers.

WLNG

Question about WLNG coverage: is the signal decent enough to listen to in NYC
(the AM or FM)? Coverage maps suggest it's really just an eastern L.I. signal
but, real-world, how is it in the Big Apple?

Someone else can probably be more accurate on this, but I remember leaving Newport and driving with WLNG-FM for a very long time. They reason I held them for so long was because ,I guess, I was traveling around the outer reaches of their pattern. I would say...zero signal in NYC proper. If you drive east to west across Long Island from Sag Harbor, you'd probably hear them...... ummm maybe half way across the island and that's it. Again, these are recollections from 26 years ago. ;)

The signal is probably very weak, because of 92.3 WXRK. Last time I was in New York City, which was a few months ago, 92.1 FM was real fuzzy.
______________

NY WLNG

that makes a lot of sense-thanks.

Sorry if I am wrong, but is that sarcasm?

Re: NY WLNG

not at all. Not living there nor listening to them locally, even looking at radio-locator.com isn't a total real listener picture of how they come and where.
