WLNG Stream

STEREO has been noted coming out of my internet radio on WLNG as well as a full sized bit rate. Did the 92.1 signal also switch over to stereo?

WLNG-FM switched to stereo on January 20th, 2011. About the same time WLNG.com switched to stereo but Live365 could only provide us with 64k mp3 stereo in our streaming plan. On December 28th, 2011 we changed audio streaming hosts with 128k mp3 and 64k aac+ listening options.

Thanks for noticing and posting!

Brian, what was the reason for the switch to stereo? I thought it was rather unique that LNG remained in mono this far into the 21st century. It's also my understanding that a mono signal carries further than one in stereo.

It's always been a battle around broadcast house... to Stereo or Not to Stereo. WLNG going stereo was something done and not promoted in case we didn't like the results. The signal didn't get degraded because of stereo, the signal had degraded more because of channel adjacency and IBOC HD radio transmitting. Radios in cars mix the signal better than before and will sometimes go into mono mode on the outer lying areas. Also buying new equipment at the studio that's in stereo and wiring it up for mono just didn't seem right. I said... "If Paul Sidney was alive, I'd sit him in my car and we would drive the signal area... if he didn't like it, the pilot would be turned off." I think he'd be happy with sound, signal coverage and still how things "sock" right in.

WLNG is one of the best sounding oldies stations in the country processing wise - certainly sounds better than CBS-FM or B103.

And the station still comes in great on the LIE till about Holbrook...then I just put it on TuneIn!
