WLNK ?'s & Syndication

Newbie here. Waaay back I was very interested in going into the Radio/TV biz. I even attended The Radio/TV Motion Picture Camp and UNC-CH in 1977. I've always had an interest in business news about the industry.

I am a big fan the The Link & I listen to B&S and M&R quite a bit.

From what I have read here and elsewhere Greater Media is a good match for WBT/WLNK.
What changes in format and content should we expect to see?

Regarding syndication. It seems syndicated radio shows have grown in the past few years. Why?
In a nutshell how does syndication work?
I read on one website that some syndicated shows are not in top markets. Why?
Do affiliates pay B&S or M&R(they have added several affiliates in the past few weeks) ad revenue or just a straight fee for broadcasting then keep ad revenue?
Do affiliates usually sign a contract to broadcast a show? I heard M&R were dropped from one station in a day due to sexual content.
Is there consolidated site for rankings of syndicated shows by market?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

I'll take a stab at this be advised I'm just making some educated guesses!

Changes by Greater Media? Maybe none, since I hear both WLNK and WBT are top billers.

Why the popularity of Syndication? The satellite technology makes it sound good, it's cheaper than having a local talent and better talent than you would find in a small market.

Revinue? They might pay a fee and I'm sure there are network spots that have to be cleared by the local stations.

I assume there is a contract so that the network can give advertisers a good idea what kind of reach the network commercials will have. The station that dropped the show might have been willing to continue to clear the commercials and pay the fee without using the show. Their may also have been an escape clause in the contract. Here's another idea maybe the contract was up and the station just made up an excuse to make themselves look good. It would be a great way to promote a new local show.

just some educated guesses from having been in the business.
