WLNY to broadcast tonight's Yankee game

I was reading through the TV listings in AM New York this morning and noticed that WLNY-55 is showing tonight's Yankee playoff game at 10pm. I assume WLNY will be broadcasting ESPN's coverage of the game. It seems odd they would choose WLNY as the broadcast station considering the over-air signal doesn't even make it into NYC. And the people watching on cable already have ESPN anyway.

WLNY in the past has aired New Jersey Nets games. To that, I would just add to your point: The Nets basically aren't in WLNY's market. Keep in mind, there may be hundreds (if not thousands) that subscribe to cable only for the broadcast channel package, and its clear pictures.<P ID="signature">______________

Well, WLNY has aired Nets games produced by YES when there was a Yankee conflict so it may not be that odd of a choice.
WLNY does have cable and mini-dish coverage of the NYC area, but if the game is on ESPN it is a moot point. Now doesn't WLNY have some LP translators? I recall seeing and ID listing them, and I think one of them was in NJ somewhere.

However, this really underscores the problem of not having a NYC indy station.
Can someone please kill Pax/i so 31 can become a real indy for NYC?

W54CZ Morristown NJ is one. (That used to be W44AW.) It's an LPTV, not a translator. At least some of the syndicated programming from WLNY was replaced at one time. Not sure now. I've always suspected that the station is there only to get must carry on the local cable system, as when I used to live 10 miles or so away, (just barely outside the claimed grade A signal area) I couldn't pick up even a ghost of a signal.

While driving through the area I managed to get it for a few miles on whatever interstate I was on (287 maybe?). It didn't last more than 5 miles on my TV tuner in my laptop with the Zenith Silver Sensor antenna. And CM7777 amplifier. It was most definitely simulcasting WLNY, as was evidenced by the WLNY-10/55 bug on it.

Here's the reason....

The regular over-the-air Yankee games were on WWOR Channel 9. Channel 9 is owned by Fox. Since Fox and ESPN have rights to the games, they don't want to step on one another with the coverage...legalities in the sense that if Fox were to telecast the game to those that don't have cable on Channel 9, it would be a way of Fox "having" all of the games and in a backhanded way get the games that ESPN would legally have. So to avoid any conflict along with the fact that the other NY stations have their own network commitments, Channel 55 was the ONLY place to televise the games since they are the only independent station here.
