WLOO-DT expresses interest in being the new CW affiliate for Jackson

I will be checking back with my contact in a few days. I am trying not to bother my contact too frequently, so that I will stay in good graces.

Believe me, the curiosity is absolutely killing me. I am REALLY hoping to have CW in HD when the fall season starts.

Yeah, I am thinking that there must be two stations going after affiliation. Evansville, IN lost their CW (also was owned by Roberts) and in little more than 4 weeks after the Roberts station was forced off the air by the FCC, an independent station gained the affiliation and was on the air. Of course, this was in the January-February time frame in the middle of the season. Since we are in the summer, there may not be quite the rush to close the affiliation deal for Jackson.

I seriously doubt that Flinn Broadcasting (owners of WWJX 51) would be interested. They are a small company out of Memphis that only owns 2 other TV stations, neither of which are affiliates of a commercial broadcasting network.

The "other" possibilities "IF" The CW returns to Jackson TV are:

Hearst Television (owner of WAPT) - They have "The CW" as a digital subchannel on their ABC-affiliated station, KHBS, in Fort Smith, Arkansas (Ft. Smith-Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers, AR) and their NBC-affiliated station, WPTZ, in Plattsburgh, New York (Burlington, VT-Plattsburgh, NY) (shares with Me-TV).

Media General (owner of WJTV) - They have "The CW" as a digital subchannel on their CBS-affiliated station, WNCT, in Greenville, NC (Greenville-New Bern-Washington, NC) and their NBC-affiliated station, WCBD, in Mount Pleasant, SC (Charleston, SC).

Raycom Media (owner of WLBT) - They have "The CW" as a digital subchannel on their CBS-affiliated station, KFVS, in Girardeau, MO (Paducah-Cape Girardeau-Harrisburg-Mt Vernon) (shares with Me-TV).

None of the other 5 stations that American Spirit Media (owner of WDBD) own, has "The CW" as a digital subchannel, but they are all operated by Raycom, so they could also be a possibility. I personally hope that it is either Hearst (WAPT currently only has weather radar as a digital subchannel) or Tougaloo (although I would rather they stay MyNetworkTV). I would absolutely HATE for The CW to be shared with, and thus preempt programming from, Me-TV, This TV, or Antenna TV. (That is my fear of what will happen if The CW returns.)

If 35 gets it the seriously need to convert to HD. They have been crappy 480i SD since day one. As for channel 51, they aren't on that channel anymore. They are on channel 23 at low power. The full power signal has never happened. I can't tell if it is even on the air since the signal from my location was so weak it was rarely seen. Doe's anyone know if WWJX will ever go full power. I haven't seen the construction permit since they moved to 23. I agree about putting it on an existing subchannel. If they are going to do that, they need to put it on a sub that isn't being used for anything and not take down ME, This, Antenna etc. If done on WAPT or WUFX they could possibly broadcast in 720p HD or at least some sort of widescreen as long as they don't sacrifice the main channels quality.

If 35 does not get the CW and it ends up a subchannel on either 3, 12 or 16, would Direct TV and DISH continue to carry the CW 50 out of Washington? I was under the impression those satellites would not carry a subchannel. Am I right or wrong?

While I cannot verify if it is accurate, I just took a quick look at the zap2it TV listings for Fort Smith, AR where The CW is on a subchannel, and the listings for both DIRECTV and DISH for that area include the local affiliate as the channel shown.

It looks like WJTV is the new CW affiliate on digital subchannel 12.2. They have replaced their weather radar with Antenna TV programming except for the 7 & 8 PM hours. Those are the only 2 hours of CW programming, which is listed in the guide now. The full Antenna TV schedule remains on digital subchannel 12.3. Who knows what is going on and what other changes may occur with their subchannels, but it appears that starting tonight The CW will be back in Jackson on WJTV 12.2.

In other WJTV news it appears the prettiest smile on Jackson TV, Morgan Miller, is leaving the station in mid September and will be replaced by new meteorologist, Brad Maushart, on the weekday morning and noon shows.

So Jackson regains The CW, but will lose Morgan Miller. Overall I call that a net loss!

A subchannel? That's disappointing. No CW in HD for Jackson, I guess. I was really rooting for WLOO to get it.

Well, hopefully WJLA will run the entirety of The CW's programming, including their Saturday morning cartoon block.

Well there was no CW programming on tonight. The TV listings for 12.2 does show CW programming from 7 - 9 PM for Monday - Friday, but they do not list the CW Saturday morning shows. I can't see Antenna TV programming staying on 2 channels, so I guess time will tell what is going on with the WJTV subchannels, but it does appear they will be the new home for The CW in some form in the very near future.

Oh S*&%. The one scenario that I didn't want to see appears to have happened. Although my wife and I are avid CBS fans, we are not fans of how Media General runs WJTV. They are the worst about weather interruptions, compared to the other local channels. They also are bad in preempting CBS programming with local sports. I sure hope they don't stomp over CW programming as well.

Anyway, I went ahead and deleted and rescanned Channel 12 in my Dish Network receiver's OTA setup. Interestingly, the channel names in the PSID setup normally encoded in the channel signal are BLANK for all 3 subchannels. That has never been the case before, so it appears they are gearing up for a reconfiguration of the subchannel setup.

It appears to me that 12.2 will become a CW/AntennaTV affiliate. I am HOPING that 12.3 disappears and 12.2 is changed to 720P so that the CW block will be in HD. I was about to reach out to my contact at WLOO, but it now appears pointless, since the 12.2 guide information clearly shows CW rerun shows from this past season in the 7-9pm block.

For the love of all that is good, I do NOT understand CW's logic on this. You have an independent channel fully willing to broadcast in HD, most likely in 1080i HD, on a PRIMARY subchannel in a Nielsen Top 100 US market. Instead, you settle for being on a secondary subchannel to a CBS affiliate and either lower HD or none at all. Does the network even care about the delivery of their signal to its viewers? Of course not.

Another concern is whether or not DirecTV and Dish Network will carry the new CW subchannel. Both companies tend to be resistant to carry subchannels outside the big 4 networks.

Maybe your contact would know what exactly went down?

I think it came down to money. Maybe WLOO couldn't afford the reverse comp, or WJTV just offered more.

I'm betting it's the money. It's always the money.

I have reached out to the contact to see what he says on this deal. Will let you know what he says.

I wouldn't totally put stock into the guide just yet. Let's face it. CW and WJTV have not announced it yet. I suspect WJTV is trying out their feed for the guide info and started with simply "Let's put in the CW guide info from 7-9pm weeknights" and see how it goes.

They are even copying a CW page layout from one of the Media General stations in Greenville, North Carolina (WNCT). They haven't quite changed it to say Jackson, MS just yet, but I'm sure they'll fix it shortly. Here is the wiki to that sister station that WJTV looks like it might model itself after:

The interesting thing is to see how they have that CBS/CW configured.

9.1 CBS 1080i HD
9.2 CW 720P HD

Based on this information, I would say we have fair odds at getting 720P. Let us only hope so!
