She was there for 13 years and had become a part of the identity of this heritage Smooth Jazz station. Why not show her the door and cut the paycheck/benefits. Another part of their history and connection with the market lopped off just like bringing Cross in to add a big infusion of Lite A/C pop hits to the playlist and move the station toward "Smooth A/C."
Gross was "quirky" to say the least but for as long as I can remember James sounded like she came out of an an upper-class east coast private school. As far from "too black" as you can get. And the trend over the last 10 years was to go heavily into the R&B side of the music and to use African American males with deep Barry White type voices for voicetracking, once again Gross was totally lost in his own little world and out of touch. That station was always a mecca for people who love(d) the music and the localism but behind the doors it has always been a very strange ride..(I applied there several times and was actually hired to do P/T then a few days before my start date, mysteriously un-hired) There won't be "people issues," lawsuits etc when there are no people left though.
