WLOQ SOLD!

From Tom Taylor at RI...

Orlando’s family-owned WLOQ is sold to another family – the Lindemanns.

The Gross family has long owned Orlando-market standalone smooth AC WLOQ, a class C2 at 103.1 licensed to Windermere, Florida. There’ve been periodic sale rumors in the past, but now there’s a filed deal at the FCC. The documents show the price to be $8,037,000 and the official buyer something called TTB Media Corporation. It’s run by Eran Schreiber, but the fine print reveals the ultimate buyer as “Lindemann Capital Partners LP.” Adam Lindemann was the principal of the former Mega Communications group that specialized in running Spanish formats along the east coast. Adam’s father George Lindemann was profiled in a June 28 New York Times Dealbook story which says he “has quietly amassed a fortune over a five-decade career of buying and selling disparate businesses, like contact lenses and cellphone licenses.” It says his son Adam “is a prominent contemporary art collector who lives in an avant-garde black concrete house hidden behind an Upper East Side carriage house.” Adam’s also the author of several well-regarded books on art. Now the family’s re-approaching the radio business, this time through “TTB Media Corporation.” Presumably they're not going to stop with just one station - so we may have a new group forming, with deep pockets.

Format change ahead at smooth AC WLOQ, with the August 1 LMA?

Among the “excluded assets” are “the intellectual property, including websites and databases owned by the seller and relating to jazz music, the station’s existing format or jazz-related event concerts…” That would seem to set the stage for an online version of WLOQ – and a format change at 103.1. The Gross family, through a different company, has interests in four stations in the Bend, Oregon market, including AC “Mix 100.7” KMGX. Thus the $8 million Orlando sale leaves them in broadcasting, and perhaps webcasting, too. In the May PPMs, the Gross’ smooth AC WLOQ tied with Clear Channel talk/classic rock “Real Radio” WTKS (104.1) in 12th place, with a 3.8 share, and a cume of about 230,000. The FCC document shows the broker to be Media Venture Partners, for seller Gross Communications.

This is a station that had an amazing run. The Gross family would occasionally do crazy things - like one time they started playing straightahead vocals because the elder Mr. Gross liked them and they were running off a DOS program in the studio all the way up to about 2005 because someone in the family didn't trust automation systems. They constantly tweaked after Steve Huntington left but they were one of the few larger market stations in the state that was owned by human beings.
It was inevitable that they would pack it in eventually. Wondering what the demographic breakdown over the last few months was. Orlando and Tallahassee may be the only markets that are "younger" than Jacksonville. This station played mostly old music but they were still playing lots of instrumentals

Last time I tuned in to WLOQ they sounded just as bad as any BA outlet.

I hate to see WLOQ go away, a lot of folks going to lose their jobs from what I heard. They have had an awesome run, not going to be the same wothout Marc and Robyn and the gang.

In an average of the three "spring" books, WLOQ was 18th in 25-54.

I'm a total traitor here :) The station has gone Spanish CHR with what seems to be a dance lean. I adore their music mix. It sounds like they are going after not just the Hispanic community but others who have been getting into this music via Daddy Yankee, Pitbull, Shakira etc, Latin dance nights in clubs and the growing Zumba Fitness/Latin Dance Fitness movement which has really gotten big, especially in Florida (it started here) and is moving beyond gyms, into clubs and getting a lot of people deeper into Spanish CHR and Reggaeton especially. This one doesn't play as many meringues and salsas as a lot of Spanish stations and their mix is a lot hotter than the Chicago station (traitor again- the one that used to be WNUA) which is an A/C lean- it seems to be carving a niche
