WLOR Translator

They are now back on the air, was picking up WTXT in Fayette, Ala. while they were off the air...

They are on the air, and are in chapter 9. They do have a terrible signal for a 50KW station. This happened when they moved their daytime site to their night time site several years ago.

I could not believe WLOR has a 50KW daytime signal. Does anyone know IF they are actualy running 50KW? I was very near Huntsville. With that very poor signal and no translator, they must be in bad shape.

Someone reported on here a while back that WLOR was runing 20-30kW at their transmitter. However, there are 5kw signals that do better than WLOR. I doubt they are even running that much. If they are, they must have some serious ground issues.

The current daytime site has been the daytime site since 1980 when WAAY went from 5k to 50k. The night time site was distroyed when M.D. Smith the IV bulldosed it and put up a Smith StoreIt there. I worked at WAAY from 1984 to 85 and the 50k signal was massive. Well, they did sometimes run it at 60kw. Originally, they had a four tower array and changed to a three tower one long before I worked there. With four towers, the signal was stronger toward Chattanooga. I've always wondered what that pattern looked like.

When BlackCrow bought 1550 WLOR, the site was in bad shape and only running 1kw daytime only. They had to invest tons into it to get it back to 50kw, cut down all the trees around the towers etc.

I'll nominate them as having the worst coverage for a 50kw station in the world, if that's what they are running. Black Crow may be trying to save money by not having it cranked up all the way.

They gotta have their daytime power cut back. I've heard their nighttime signal ( I think it's like 44 watts) and it covers North and East Huntsville pretty good. Even two years ago they had a better signal than they do now.
