WLOX and CBS

According to the AVS forum, WLOX sometime in the spring will start carrying both ABC and CBS. CBS will have its own subchannel on WLOX. Details are sketchy but this has been reported on the AVS forum under Biloxi, MS and WLOX is keeping the details under wraps. I do not know how this will affect WHLT.

It shouldn't effect WHLT at all but I'm worry it going effect WWL-TV and WKRG because these are our primary CBS stations here on the Coast.

I just readed on sun herald, that CBS accepted to go head to put the network on WLOX digital signal sometime as early as April 1, 2012. But Cable One isn't very happy about losing one of the CBS stations out of Mobile or New Orleans. I just hope they won't mess with Satellite TV companies. I be sad I lose WWL TV in the process.

In case y'all didn't catch the news, Broadcasting and Cable is reporting that Fox 25 WXXV is adding NBC to it's 25.2 subchannel too. Biloxi will have a full slate with no more need for any Mobile or New Orleans TV stations on satellite or cable.

Good use of the digital spectrum. WLOX is a great TV station and I am sure that what they put on their D2 signal will be similar.

When NBC affiliate WALB in Albany, Ga added ABC to their .2 subchannel it was 4:3 SD OTA. I haven't turned my antenna in that direction in about a year now so I don't know if they worked out sharing the bandwidth between NBC on .1 and ABC on .2 with two HD feeds.

I would assume that the Biloxi cable companies will keep either the Mobile or New Orleans HD feeds for NBC and CBS until WLOX and WXXV can provide their own HD feed either OTA or by fiber. Don't know about satellite. Dish/DirecTV viewers may be screwed if WLOX and WXXV don't have HD feeds of CBS and NBC when they finally get dish carriage.

I have read that some DTV stations are carrying one network in 720p and a second network in 1080i, so it should be possible to broadcast all four networks between WLOX and WXXV. Biloxi could use a third full power TV station to pick up CW, My Net, and maybe This or Me. I assume they have a cable only CW+ affiliate run by either WLOX or WXXV.

With WXXV also being the Fox affiliate for Hattiesburg and Hattiesburg already having a NBC affiliate in WDAM. I wonder how this new NBC affiliation with WXXV will play out in the Hattiesburg market? I wonder if WDAM may be about to launch a Fox affiliate on their .2?

Oh, wow, I didn't realize Hattiesburg had a new LPTV Fox affiliate. 10.4kw at 142 meters and they ID as Fox 23 with the PSIP of Channel 30, interesting... What % of the population of the Hattiesburg DMA does the LP Fox cover? Maybe I should also ask how large the Hattiesburg DMA is too? I know Jackson is a huge DMA and Meridian covers everything north east of Hattiesburg with all 4 affiliates on full power signals. Biloxi isn't very big being wedged between Mobile and New Orleans with Hattiesburg not too far north.

I guess that means Hattiesburg needs an ABC affiliate. I guess WDAM or WHLT will eventually add ABC to a .2 DTV sub for Hattiesburg unless a minority broadcaster gets a LPTV ABC affiliation.

WLOX 13.1 should have added WDAM's signal on its 13.2 and WDAM 7.1 should have been added to WLOX's 13.2 subchannel. This way there would have been fewer problems since both stations are by the same owner, namely Raycom. As things stand now WLOX's 13.2 signal gets into Hattiesburg. And and since WLOX is carrying CBS on its subchannel 13.2 there may be a complaint or two by Media General, owner of WHLT which is a sattellite of WJTV about this arrangement.

Yeah, that sounds reasonable, but would there have been any issues with market rights to syndicated TV shows like Wheel of Fortune, The People's Court, Dr. Phil, etc...?
Gray did something similar with their CBS affiliate in Thomasville, GA, WCTV, which had been CBS for the Tallahassee and Albany, GA DMAs. They purchased channel 44 in Valdosta to make it the CBS affiliate for Valdosta-Albany. That way they could split the advertising off for the Albany, GA DMA to channel 44 and concentrate on Thomasville-Tallahassee advertisers with their flagship WCTV. They also had to change some of the syndicated programming for channel 44 due to the shows already having homes on the existing NBC or Fox affiliates in Albany but besides that they are pretty much a simulcast.

Since Media General is a much bigger owner of TV stations than whoever owns WXXV, I assume WLOX considered this before going with CBS for secondary affiliation. Also, are there any CP's for new full power TV stations in the Biloxi or Hattiesburg markets that someone may have hoped to put a major network on? If so those CPs might end up in the hands of religious broadcasters now. How is it that Mobile has 3 full power religious TV stations (all with commercial licenses) and Biloxi and Hattiesburg have none?

In counting 3 religious stations in Mobile, are you counting WMPV WHBR WDPM? HBR is licensed to Pensacola.

Yes I am counting WHBR since all three stations broadcast from the Baldwin county towers. I was just calling the Mobile/Pensacola/Ft Walton TV market by the shorter name of "Mobile." I did not include any of the LPTV religious stations or all of WMPV's sub channels. We probably have a dozen if all those are included.

Thinking about it now, the Mobile market just has so many full power TV stations. There are also the two "wasted" stations from Ft Walton, WPAN and WFBD. I've been thinking for quite a while that if WALA isn't going to do something about their DT signal that WALA should buy WFBD or WPAN to simulcast Fox to the white area between Pensacola, Panama City, and Dothan (they could have WALA "Fox ALA" and WPAN "Fox PAN(handle) (or Fox Florida)" and introduce a newscast to compete with WEAR).

Getting back on topic, the Mobile market has so many full power TV stations I think it might be more profitable to move one of them to Biloxi if the FCC hasn't or won't allocate another signal for that market.

In the meantime, WXXV has gotten a NBC affiliation for Biloxi that will start airing in July. OK who is going to get the ABC affiliation for Laurel-Hattiesburg. I know WTOK has some reach into Laurel.

My guess would be that Raycom will pick up ABC for Hattiesburg's WDAM. NBC 7.1 / ABC 7.2. The precedence I'm going on would be that Raycom has the same setup on their Albany, GA station, WALB 10: WALB-NBC 10.1, WALB-ABC 10.2.

Although, with Fox being on a LPTV in Hattiesburg there's always the possibility of a minority broadcaster with a LPTV license grabbing the affiliation, or ABC becoming a .2 of the Hattiesburg Fox LPTV. I only add this possibility because it seems a little strange that nothing has already been announced...

I have not seen anybody update on this, but i just went up there for a night and WDAM has NBC 7.1, ABC 7.2 and Bounce 7.3.
So they took off wlox and wxxv from the cable systems and added WDAM- ABC and Fox 23. No more stations from the coast unless you put up your antenna.

Probably not for a long time. WLOX's sister station WALB has been carrying ABC in SD on their .2 for several years now.
