WLPH changes calls

I was looking on the FCC website today and noticed WLPH in Irondale has changed calls to WRLM, effective a couple of days ago. The FCC record says the station is owned by Davidson Media Group. Did Willis Broadcasting sell off the Birmingham stations they had? or all of them?

I tuned them in this afternoon. To be honest, I had forgotten that this station (1480 AM) was still on the air. No more black gospel...they've switched to regional Mexican, joining 1450 in Bessemer, 1500 in Alabaster and 1010 in Dora. Four low-powered AM rimshots in the Birmingham area...and none of them can be picked up very well in downtown.

Sounds like to me that the Mexican population is growing, in size and number. All they need now, is a TV and full powered FM station of their own. Wonder if these things are in the works for the Magic City or am I drinking too much Mountain Dew?

R.D.P. <><

P.S. Hope this new Mexican station will have success and will attact a loyal following to it.

I hear the 1500, WQCR in Alabaster NEVER powers down, staying on it's 2300 Watt Day power around the clock!

that's probably true. I live less than 10 miles from the transmitter in Alabaster, and I've heard it several times at night with a signal comparable to the daytime signal. Isn't WQCR licensed to operate with some miniscule power at night?

man i worked at wlph in the 80's.

tony sands and bill frink. i guess tony is still in sicily.

the st clair hispanic population has tripled in the last year. every third restaurant is mexican. i think that is their target. they can't get on wurl in moody so they got their chief competitor in the market.

a low power tv in the branchville area would be a coup. spanish infomercials!!!

good to hear that lph is still kicking.

Is the religious LPTV on 38 with a Moody COL still operating? Or the one on 50 in Ashville which used to be America One repeating WOIL-LP in Sylacauga? I haven't caught either in years and I'm very close to both. Spanish on either (especially the latter) would make a lot of sense.

1480 is probably the best bet for putting a decent signal over most of Birmingham, and between them and 1450 in Bessemer they do a good job. AFAIK Hoover is still where most of the Hispanic population resides in the area.. Although St. Clair County has a lot too.

I don't see any Spanish language music or otherwise on FM anytime soon in the area... Maybe some company will prove me wrong. ;)

What does surprise me is the lack of a local TV station carrying Telemundo or Azteca or some other Spanish language network. I know there's enough business in the metro to support at least one TV station. All of the people I worked with (who were from Mexico and Guatemala) subscribed to cable or DirecTV.
