WLRS CHANGES FORMAT!

Based on that sample hour post It doesnt look like something I would enjoy listening to. It seems more like a AOR than Active. I dont know how they think they are gonna compete with all 3 Qmf, sfr, and fox with that weak signal. If they were gonna keep the LRS calls they should have went straight alternative, or even a AAA modern alternative hybrid like FPK or the old She 93.1..(GOOD STATION) Their playlist seems to now be full of stiffs, no one is gonna listen to that when THE Fox is right there with a good metro signal, not the best signal by any means, but way better than 105.1, especially in Dowtown and the Southern Indiana suburbs.

But for some reason mid west louisville and its people me excluded do not like alternative for if they did she 93.1 would still be around and wlrs would still be alt like it was in 2000. and Q2 105.9 would still be around but they are all gone. Rock is a much easier sell to clients then alt i bet and if they had gone to a hybrid aaa/modern rock they would have been competeing with the max this way they are not and even though i am no fan of the new format at least it has some ebb and flow to it unlike before. Tool and seether and ac/dc make more sense then metallica and modest mouse.I think it will work to a degree but i like your idea so much better to bad they did not go that route. But why on earth they kept the calls wlrs is beyond me those things are cursed and out weared there welcome!!!

Actually SHE 931 was doing great in ratings, it's not around because of a personal issue with CC Matthews and Karen Rite.. the plan was SHE moves to 989 and the HAWK goes to 931... but SHE 931 had a sweeper once that said something about no backstreet boys-- the first song as "SHE 989" was a backstreet boys song, CC had his "DJX" back, and, it's no secret CC and Karen hated each other

after all the discussion it seems to come down to this-----another rock station with a dirty signal seemingly targeted at nobody in particular.
to even compete with sfr or qmf with their coverage (not just the power but WHERE they are strong, in Shivley), they'd have to be pretty spectacular to have even a ghost of a chance. it's not.

y-a-w-n

Actually, WLRS just moved to a new transmitter site on Mitchell Hill. At this new transmitter site they are directional. They are now putting a null over the city of Louisville. This was a CP left over from the Radio One days that for some reason Main Line saw it nessessary to build out. Putting a null over the very city you are trying to serve is a very bonehead idea. But then again, that was Radio One's mode of operations.

Karen Rite is one of the best programmers in the country!

So i want to know do you all think mainline did the right thing with 105.1

From a business standpoint and bringing revenue in it has a shot at it now but as a listener i would have liked to see a triple a or more alternative station go in there but no matter what what gives with keeping the calls makes no sense when you are trying to start over. Who cares if the lrs calls have been around forever so was waky so was 100s of others but when yiou are trying to rebrand it does not help keeping the calls aside from that i think from a business standpint they did the right thing for my persoanl taste i won't be listeing very often.

LRS put out a press release with that doof George Lindsey saying things like "speakers all over town are smoking", "exploding on the music and radio scene" and hyped their supposed "full market upgrade". He left out the huge hole over the east side of Jefferson County and the fact you can't pick them up over an even larger part of the market with their *upgrade* (though their reception should be better in Sheperdsville and Mt Washington).

They should have somebody who speaks like a season professional write that thing. :p

It also said joe mann freak show joe is the program director of wlrs. That man had no business on the air in radio and also why didn't wlrs stunt to create buzz it just seems they did this format flip half way christ they did better when rock 102 went to mix 102. The end result though is better then what they had 105.1 i am sayin but still the flip could have been done much better!!!

It'll be interesting if they tighten up the music in the next month or so. Some of the classics they're playing are a bit odd. It doesn't appear that they did much research to figure out what format hole needed filling or what music would be best to play. As far as their signal, I haven't noticed much difference in it. Maybe they geared the format to the type of listeners they think live in the best parts of their coverage area. Right now, they seem to me like they would be someones P3 station at best. Then again, this is Louisville. They may end up being number one by fall ;D

As someone stated early this will stop the bleeding and create a bit of buzz and maybe just maybe garner a 2 share maybe 2.7. But it was not a well executed flip. They should have stunted and dropped the lrs calls and hopefully they will bring someone good in for program director.

Like when clear channel took over QMF from otting broadcasting they did a very funny flip a format an hour for 24 hours or so very funny but it was all a stunt as we know what the format is today.

Or when rock 102 went to mix 102 and the countdown clock"new year bring new radio station to 102.3 fm"or when magic 100 went to djx and stunted for an hour with christmas carols.

Or when the sunny station came on in 1989 and george lindsey was pd of that and they played songs with sun in them for a while so wtf.

Also when mix flipped to lrs in 1997 and played the beatles i am the walrus.

They could have done lots of cool things but this is louisville in 2008 so whatever

HOTP you're the WLRS expert, what do you know? icycool, are they streaming?

Nope they are not streaming yet. I don't even know what stream service they would use to try and tweak the urls. This sure was like a bomb waiting to explode. Hot p. and everyone else has been saying on here it needed to change for months now. Just wish I could have an aircheck and my collection is growing every week now.

I see they play Pink Floyd now whom I cannot stand at all (no offense to Pink Floyd fans). The playlist looks similar to WHQG 102-9 The Hog in Milwaukee, WI (and of course the other Hog rock stations) with the name "Everything That Rocks" - thought only Saga Communications used that slogan? I don't know what to think of their new logo either - I liked the old one better. I just heard about this from hot p. today. I wonder if the Fox is worried about competition now?

I agree about some of their classics. I like Skynard and Foreigner, but if I were programming WLRS, I think I'd leave those bands for QMF and SFR.

Most new stations actually start out with their tight list, then begin to loosen up after 6-9 months. Virtually nobody (with brains) starts wide then tightens up.

And, don't be so quick to diss Louisville radio- Edison Media listed the market #10 in the U.S. for quality of radio, variety of formats, etc. Board ops and parttimers in just about every market around the country believe their market is stale, sucks, no variety

I wonder if the Fox is worried about competition now?

I think they were more of a competition for us when they were "new rock." They don't have nearly as much in common with us now. Except for a crappy signal that is, lol.

To whom is may concern, I never "dissed" louisville radio. My comment about louisville was in reference to the fact that with the listeners in this market, there's always a little bit of a surprise as to what does well in the ratings. I doubt if they'll pull a 2.7 as someone predicted earlier, but you never know.

We have plenty of variety but the market is very stagnant they never try anything new here and when they do the suits are quick to change it but i think it is a mindset in this town other then the suits peeps here just like the tried and true and reject anything new thats out of the ordinary.

I have used this example but will again she 93.1 what is it today it is kiss 98.9. It use to be when it was she a cool lighter side of alt like old 97s and i keep hereing conflicting things why they flipped she 93.1 first i here cc matthews did it to be vindictive seems odd to give one man such power to flip a station without the higher ups and then i here they couldn't sell the format to advertisers so they flipped it which is it?

Back in 2000 wlrs was a true alternative station for a couple years and then it became a very bad station and we use to at least have one liberal talk show here now nada nothing!!!

The fox is the only station that tries to be different with there 90s at noon and there indie music at midnight on sunday.

P.S. i said probably a 2 and no higher then a 2.7 just throwing numbers around i bet you are right craven they will not hit a 2.7 not with that signal.

But i reiterate it is the listeners in this town much moreso then the suits i think is to blame.

Hey Craven, what days-times are you on the air?
