WLS 100th birthday

The first 10 years of the WLS talk format were excellent. Mostly live (except Limbaugh as first a fill, then permanent). Jeff Hendricks and Jim Johnson still doing news with a pretty upbeat presentation. All the hosts weren't conservative. I listened a lot in that era. Obviously it's gone way down hill.
Don Wade was a curmudgeon, but at least he was the genuine article, as was his mild-mannered wife Roma. But surly libertarian Stacy Taylor and borderline-insane liberal Bob Lassiter were disasters. Fortunately, both were sent packing in a couple years or so. Neither had a prayer of working out in Chicago.

Glen Clark and I discussed the very topic about WLS TLs and APPs.

One thing they probably wouldn't be required to do is reduce power at Night if they moved further North. All other things being the same, the contours would pull in slightly due to the new skywave model. The skywave signal contours would also be pushed North into Canada, where it wouldn't matter.

WLS History Card. TLs on Second Card. Addison TL APP and another were on other pages. And yes, for a short time very early on, they broadcast from near Crete, IL.

Other strange sounding early TLs of Midwest area stations include WJJD Mooseheart, IL and WJR Sylvan Lake, MI.

Between our Radio Discussion administrators, and fccinfo.com, we have easy access to History with a few clicks. The FCC.gov site is good also, but can be difficult to navigate and slow to load.
I think you are missing one of the other radio history sites...

I was just suggesting that two of our administrators have sites that allow easy access to station history information. Of course David has the biggest, most complete site to access such historical information. I use all of them. I like the fact that more and more technical information is becoming available, such as old AM DA pattern data. Different sites often have different data. They complement each other.

When viewing the FCC history cards for WLS, looks like they were also looking at West Chicago as a new transmitting site after an objection was filed over the Addison site.

West Chicago wouldn't have been much of an improvement. I saw something about WCFL filing an objection. Glen and I talked about WDLS 900 being something also requiring fancy footwork.

Strange that WLS and WMVP were essentially co owned for a while much later. WMVP even used the WLS site for an AUX. Glen also did the APP for WMVP to replace the towers and change the pattern at the site in Downers Grove.

I always wondered why WLS never "sacrificed" Night Time Skywave for some kind of directional pattern for better City coverage after Sears sold it. They could have gone north of town "redirected" the power south away from Canada and still covered most of the US population at night.

There are stories on Facebook about the Glen Clark dog legged array for WMVP being narrow banded due to the way the DA was fed, shunt fed vs. series fed per Disney's choice at the time. Did Glen Clark ever discuss this with you? Apparently the HD signal that was attempted at that time was a no go because of the narrow bandwidth issue.
